Do you find yourself engaging in monologues often? While taking shower or walking, do you find yourself talking to your self? I do.

Sometimes when I am looking at online shopping platforms, I do end having a full length conversation with myself as to what could look good, which product is cheaper – often leading to debates, of course with myself.

A lot of us talk ourselves before going out on an important date, or before a presentation – there is nothing wrong with it. Study says, it is perfectly normal and to an extent, kind. The temptation to talk to oneself might strike at any time. The truth is that giving in does not characterise you as odd or suggest that there is a problem.

Your performance and general wellbeing can both benefit from self-talk. For instance, studies demonstrate that self-talk can improve athletic performance. They could benefit from having more endurance or being able to lift more weight.

In fact, according to a New York based clinical psychologist Dr. Jessica Nicolosi, “One can argue that just thinking things through quietly, without speaking out loud, is talking to ourselves.” She also adds that talking to oneself is completely “within the norm”.

Dr. Nicolosi believes that, talking to one self can help in processing thoughts more coherently, In her words, “If we speak out loud, it forces us to slow down our thoughts and process them differently because we engage the language centers of our brain. By talking to ourselves we become more deliberate, and this creates a slower process to think, feel and act, instead of being bombarded by our thoughts.”

Additionally, having a positive mindset and positive self-talk might have additional health advantages including enhanced energy, higher life satisfaction, lesser stress, and more.

However, note that in cases where self-talk is a result of a possible hallucination, it becomes problematic. The term, A “talking to yourself” refers to purposefully conversing with oneself as opposed to conversing with a supposed external agency.

Also, negative self talk is detrimental to your mental health. You are you best friend and your worst enemy – hence choose what you would want to tell your self. Negative self talk can often lead you towards a negative outcome as suggested by several research works.

So, be kind to your self and use the tool of self talk with love and care.
