5 Recent Scams And Scandals Under BJP Rule

-

The recent breaking open of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) scam, where manipulation of massive crores worth of equipment, medicines, tenders and more was found to be taking place, joins the list of just another scandal or scam that shook the nation. The thing that has some people raising a question, though, is that all this has happened in very quick succession, all under the rule of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Now, corruption and scandals have taken place under practically every political party of India, even ones that are not in power. There is no political party or politician that is all pure, or in more colloquial language, ‘doodh ke dhule’. However, some observations have come up particularly about how the BJP has responded to these controversies, or the lack thereof as well.

Just in the past year, you can count the NEET exam paper leak, the Ram Mandir donation scam, the massive land buying by Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav and his family, particularly in areas that are soon to be developed, and more have taken place.

The pattern noticed here, though, is that the blame is often being pushed onto individuals, with the big faces of the party staying silent or mentioning other parties, calling it a conspiracy, along with no real action being taken against some of those individuals even.

They might be removed from their position if there is significant backlash, but they are then just placed in some other department or position, with no real consequences or punishment given.

Here we take a look at 5 such recent scams or scandals that have taken place under the current ruling party.

Dharmendra Pradhan And Neet

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)-UG paper leak controversy is not isolated to just the one from this year, given that a similar paper leak took place very recently in 2024.

This year, the only nationwide test for admission to undergraduate medical programs conducted by India’s National Testing Agency had over 2.27 million candidates sitting for it on May 3, 2026; however, less than two weeks later on May 12, 2026, the paper was cancelled after investigations revealed that the papers had been leaked as guess papers.

What followed was a massive case where NTA officials, middlemen supplying the papers, students, parents and more were rounded up in a country-wide investigation into the paper leaks.

In the midst of this, though, the innocent students and their parents held protests across the country, wondering what they did wrong, and that all their years of preparation were just cut off in a single move. Many also vocally called for the resignation of not just the NTA officials, but also the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as well.

The Cockroach Janata Party even led a protest at the Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, on June 6, 2026, for the same reason. This is because a paper leak took place within just two years, when a similar situation happened in 2024. However, among all this, Dharmendra Pradhan remained as the Education Minister, a post he has held since 2021.

Back in 2024, Pradhan had dismissed the paper leak claims, saying, “I want to assure the students and their parents that the Government of India and NTA are committed to providing justice to them. Twenty-four lakh students have successfully taken the NEET examination. There is no paper leak; no proof has been found yet. A court-recommended model was adopted for around 1560 students, and a panel of academicians has been formed for the same…We will accept the verdict of the Court.”

He added, “There is no corruption. In connection with the NEET examination, 24 lakh students appear in the examination. A hearing in the Supreme Court is underway today, and this issue is regarding around 1,500 students. Govt is ready to give answers to the Court. This specific issue is being taken into consideration, and a committee of academicians has been formed. The Government will present this in front of the Court…NTA conducts 3 major examinations, that is NEET, JEE and CUET, successfully in the country…We will take action against the people responsible…”

While Pradhan did accept responsibility for the 2026 paper leak, he reportedly said, “NTA had placed its trust in certain teachers, but some of them did not fulfil their responsibility. Rakshak hi bhakshak ban gaye (the protectors themselves turned predators),” and how “Despite that [accepting 70 of the 120 recommendations given by the K Radhakrishnan committee], lapses happened. We feel pain and regret over it. We are accountable to the students and have no option except to apologise.”

The calls for his resignation, though, intensified when Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote, “The country’s aware youth is demanding just one thing — the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan. It has become the first test of accountability. Unfortunately, the BJP has completely failed this exam.”

PM Modi’s birthday wish to Pradhan in June also received a lot of criticism. In a tweet, he wrote, “Birthday wishes to Union Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan Ji. He is making commendable efforts towards the implementation of the National Education Policy, which seeks to make India a hub for knowledge, learning and innovation.”

The Congress chief whip in the Rajya Sabha, Jairam Ramesh, also filed a notice of a question of privilege against Pradhan for lowering the dignity of Parliament.

As per Ramesh, Pradhan’s comments about the parliamentary committee while speaking to the media were “derogatory.”

As per the notice, Ramesh claimed that Pradhan, while being asked by the education ministry, had not implemented the recommendations made by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education related to the NTA.

Ramesh states that “To this question, the minister responded as follows: ‘I will not comment on parliamentary standing committee red flags. I will speak about the High-Level Committee of Experts/Radhakrishnan Committee. The parliamentary standing committee has members from the opposition. They write things in a certain manner, you also know that. Hence, I won’t speak on the standing committee.'”

Mohan Yadav’s Ujjain Land Grab

Mohan Yadav was appointed Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh in December 2023. However, a recent investigation by The Indian Express has revealed that Yadav, along with his family, have been quietly accumulating land in Ujjain’s development corridors in the months and years before and after Yadav became CM.

According to the investigation, it was found that Yadav and his family members had bought around 168 acres of land and 137 plots in Ujjain, for around Rs. 45 crore since December 2023.

The location of these plots was interesting because most of them were in or around the areas said to be decided for a massive infrastructural upgrade planned in the city called the Ujjain Master Plan 2035. The upgrades included highways, new roads, and “expansion of residential and commercial spaces.”

According to the report, this would be making “Ujjain one of India’s hottest property markets.”

The ownership records revealed that “these plots were purchased by Mohan Yadav’s wife Seema, son Vaibhav’s wife Shalini Yadav, brothers Nandlal and Narayan Yadav, Narayan’s wife Rekha, their son Abhay Yadav, and first cousins Govind and Nilesh Yadav.”

Even the real estate companies that bought some of these plots are owned by the family.

According to Mohan Yadav’s personal 2023 asset declaration, his own immovable property in Ujjain includes agricultural land valued over Rs. 15.88 crore and non-agricultural land valued at over Rs. 8.66 crore.

Furthermore, while the land was bought for an estimated collective Rs. 45 crore, market valuations have spiked exponentially, with experts estimating that costs have the potential to rise up to ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 per square foot.

The Ram Mandir Donation Scam

The Ram Mandir donation scam is also among the most talked-about topics at the moment. With a petitioner alleging that the scam could involve theft of almost Rs. 200 crore and the investigation still going on, the thing people have focused on is that General Secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra are not being mentioned among the accused as much as they should be.

The BJP has attempted to frame the scandal as a limited issue involving lower-level employees, insisting that the government is acting swiftly and professionally. Party leaders have also accused the opposition of exploiting the controversy to tarnish Hindu faith and undermine a national symbol.

Delhi’s DGHS Scam

A massive corruption racket was found to be taking place at the General Health Services (DGHS) by the Delhi Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB). The Vigilance Department has arrested three officials: D. Vinod Kumar Ranga, former Head of Office, Central Procurement Agency (CPA); Dr Vatsala Aggarwal, former Director General Health Services (DGHS), and Neeraj Chopra, Deputy Controller of Accounts (DCA), CPA, DGHS.

This was done after a First Information Report (FIR) was filed on June 2, under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita including the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and criminal conspiracy.

The Print, quoting the ACB FIR, revealed that, “As per the information received, the group allegedly promoted cartelisation, connived with government officers, manipulated government tenders and siphoned off government money to the tune of several hundreds of crores of rupees.”

The ACB also believes that the total amount of CPA’s procurement fraud is estimated to be somewhere between Rs. 600-700 crore.

As per the ACB, “Payment of Rs 75 crore has been done for material worth Rs 25 crore, and Rs 50 crore have been taken away by Rajiv Rangila and distributed amongst himself and officers of DGHS/CPA,” while, “Procurement for item which was worth Rs 1.25 crore has been done at Rs 7.5 crore, and Rs 6.25 crore have been taken away by Rajiv Rangila from government exchequer and distributed amongst himself and officers of DGHS/CPA.”

The Print report also stated, “For basic items like bedsheets and pillow covers, tenders were finalised on the e-procurement portal. The bedsheets were bought at an inflated rate of Rs 450 per piece. In comparison, the exact same manufacturers supply the same sheets with identical specifications to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and other government departments at just Rs 150 per piece.”

Madhya Pradesh IAS Land Deal

On April 4, 2022, fifty senior officers, IAS and IPS cadre, drawn from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Haryana, and central Delhi postings, collectively purchased agricultural land in Guradi Ghat village in Bhopal’s Kolar area. All on the same day. Through a single registered transaction. For Rs. 5.5 crore, against a market value of Rs. 7.78 crore.

Within just 16 months of this land purchase, a Western Bypass project valued at ₹3,200 crore was given approval for that particular land itself. Not just that, but the land was changed from agriculural to residential, 10 months after the initial purchase, which resulted in the overall value of the land increasing almost 11 times.
