House parties have been permanently banned by online lodging marketplace Airbnb.

This comes on top of a temporary ban placed in 2020 where house parties were prohibited in compliance with COVID-related social distancing norms.

Since then, the ban on parties has eventually changed the company’s community policy on the matter altogether. This decision was made to serve the interests of the property hosts and their neighbours.

“Chronic party houses” were already banned in 2019 after a Halloween party in California witnessed a shooter take the life of five people. Furthermore, all open-invite house parties were also banned leaving invitation-only parties unscathed. Now, however, they are banned too.

On the more positive side of things, the 16-person cap on occupancy that was instated during the COVID-19 pandemic has been lifted in view of several large properties such as European castles, American vineyards and Caribbean beachfront properties listed on the platform that can easily accommodate many more occupants than the previous limit.

The company runs a tip line that allows neighbors or others to report parties. Airbnb noted that it saw a 44 percent drop in the rate of party reports after the ban was implemented in 2020 and it suspended the accounts of around 6,600 guests for breaking the policy last year

Airbnb runs a dedicated line that allows neighbours of a particular property to tip the company off about prohibited parties. The number of such reports steadily dropped after the implementation of the ban in 2020.

Approximately 6,600 guest accounts were suspended for violation of the policy last year.
