Too many old clothes to know what to do with?

Here’s a list of India-based companies across various locations that help you deal with your old clothes by creating new garments out of them (aka upcycling). These also hold good for thrifting and donating.

1. Indore: Punah

Punah promotes sustainable fashion by transforming your old clothes into new unique products that you can get a lot of use out of. Simply reach out to them and they will arrange the pick-up based on your location. Then, it’s a matter of analysing the fabrics of your old garments to find out which of them can be upcycled.

2. Chennai: Oh Scrap Madras

Oh Scrap Madras collects waste garments from tailoring units and exporters in Chennai to produce new sustainable clothing. One prerequisite for acceptance is that the clothes must be recently washed. If the clothes are found to be in impeccable condition, thrift stores are suggested where they will be accepted.

3. Bengaluru: Rimagined

Rimagined solves waste management in the fashion industry by converting old clothes into home décor and new clothing. In case the clothes are deemed already fit for wear, they are redirected to Restore, a Bengaluru-based thrift store. In case the donated times are curtains, bed sheets, or saris, they are sent over to their Kolkata centre for upcycling.

4. Delhi: Clothes Box Foundation

Clothes Box Donation is an NGO based in Delhi that boasts about 3.5 million distributed clothing, has been a cause of joy for many in need. They also empower women by providing them with a source of income through their Refresh programme. The women are trained to manufacture bags, blankets, etc. from rejected fabrics.

5. Kolkata: Twirl

Twirl, a Kolkata-based company tackles the immense excess of clothing in the country by collecting old garments and fabric from people willing to donate their old clothes at strategically located disposal boxes in Kolkata. Free doorstep pickup is an option pan-India too. These donations are then either upcycled or donated.

6. Bengaluru: Pomogrenade

Driven by a zero-waste goal, Pomogrenade sells clothing that can be returned to them where they can be converted into embellishments to be used in other clothing. The donors are then rewarded with a discount applicable on their new products for sale.

7. Pune: Ka-Sha

Disturbed by the amount of waste generated by the fashion industry, Ka-Sha provides an upcycling avenue where saris are converted into dresses. They also take in donations from other businesses to create products under their own brand.

8. Bengaluru: Temptations from Devaki’s

Run by a mother with her two daughters, this venture converts saris into quilts, cushion covers etc. For people residing in Bangalore, they arrange doorstep pickups while people from other states can send their clothing via post. The upcycled items are then sent back to the donors at a minimal charge.

The next time you have a bunch of old clothes, you know what to do!
