Finally, after days and weeks of it being almost something of a Netflix or soap opera drama online, the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard case has ended.

On Tuesday a jury in the Fairfax County Court in Virginia, US gave the ruling for the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation trial in Depp’s favour. The final verdict found that the 2018 op-ed written by Amber Heard for The Washington Post where she called herself “a public figure representing domestic abuse” was defaming towards Depp.

While the article itself did not outright mention Johnny Depp by name he was still targeted because of the contents in the piece that affected his public image and career. After almost seven weeks the jury unanimous ruled in favour of Depp on three counts and stated that the actor should be given a compensation of $15 million.

The amount was later on reduced by the judge to $10.35 million giving the reason that there is a limit to “punitive damages under state law “punitive damages under state law”.

However, in the midst of all this, Heard was also awarded a compensation of $2 million by the jury. Why was this though?

Amber Heard Compensated

Apparently, the jury while finding Heard guilty of defaming Depp with her article also found that the actress herself had been defamed by one of Depp’s lawyers.

This was when a lawyer from Depp’s legal team had claimed that Heard and her friends had “spilled a little wine and roughed the place up, got their stories straight and called police”.

This along with claims that Amber Heard’s abuse allegations were a hoax were found to be defaming toward the actress by Depp’s lawyers. In lieu of this Depp has been told to pay $2 million (just over ₹15 crore) as compensation to Amber Heard for her damages.

So while two of the three counts of Heard’s against Depp were rejected by the jury they did agree that the third one about Depp’s lawyer defaming her were right.

However, the jury found Amber guilty of all three counts made by Johnny against her. As per reports, the jury ruled that Amber calling Johnny an abuser had defamed him and that she had made these comments ‘with actual malice’ increasing the severity of the offence in regards to public figures.
