Watch: 5 Bands That Redefined Music In Bengal

The forgotten era of Bengali music was a short yet glorious mark of unique and daring experiments.

In the concluding decade of the previous century, Kolkata became the face of a new wave of music. Breaking directly away from the antiquated style of Bengali music, Kolkata witnessed a generational breakthrough the development of new and independent Bengali bands.

These bands cared little for the old melody of monotony which has been prevalent for the last three decades and created an entire genre of music by themselves.

Following in the footsteps of Beatles, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, and Queen, these bands have left their influence on Bengali music for good.

It is one that still amazes us twenty to thirty years later.

Here are five such bands that revolutionized music in Bengal:

Through their unique and innovative music, these young men from the 90s and the early 2000s created a niche for Bengali bands in India. Many of them still remain together and they often tour the world while others have broken.

Gautam Chattopadhyay, the legendary lead of “Mohiner Ghoraguli”, died tragically at the age of 52 in 1999 at the age of 50, thus breaking up the band.

However, their music shall always remain in the hearts of many music-loving citizens of this country.
