“That’s what careless words do. They make people love you a little less.” Arundhati Roy definitely knows the profound importance of words and the impact they leave on people; they either bring your close ones closer or push them farther away.

Words are the most basic element in our everyday life; from waking up to retiring to bed, we need “words” for anything and everything. But the difficult part is to know where and when to say what and how.

It is through words that you can either win over someone or make them lose interest in you. It is as simple as that. Words are the most powerful tool of communication, and they have a deep impact on all your relationships.

Words Are The Foundation Of All Relationships

Although there are several other factors one needs to fulfill in order to sustain a healthy bond with someone, communication is the foundation of every relationship. Flowers, chocolates, movie dates, long drives: all these romantic gestures might kindle a spark of passion in your relationship, but we also need someone who simply asks us about our day and listens to us describe every little detail.

It is extremely important to know how to converse with your partner in public and in private. The way you treat them amongst people or even just the two of you leaves a marked effect on your relationship.

You can respect your partner, love and care for them, or even have a strong physical bond, but it is through your words that you can subconsciously make them love you a little more.

What The Study Says

Research at the University of California shows that using the pronoun “we” instead of “I” brings a great deal of happiness to one’s relationships. “We” is a symbol of dependency, and the use of this word enhances the romance factor in a relationship.

One of the researchers said, “By examining all these studies together, they let us see the bigger picture. ‘We talk’ is an indicator of interdependence and general positivity in romantic relationships. The primary takeaway is that interdependence may bring about supportive and relationship-centered behaviours and positive perceptions of the partner — especially important in times of stress and conflict.”

The Power Of Words

Words play a significant role in our subconscious minds.

Benjamin Franklin said, “Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.”

Words have the power to ruin lives. It takes one negative remark, or maybe an offensive joke, to trigger some personal underlying trauma in someone. Your words can cost a person’s mental health.

On the other hand, a positive comment or a few words of encouragement can help someone boost his or her confidence to achieve any goal in life. That is how easy it is to motivate or dispirit someone with your words.
