Sri Lankan cricketer, Danushka Gunathilaka was charged with raping a woman while he was in Australia for the T20 World Cup. Now, the reports suggest that he had choked the victim and left her fearing for her life.

The Case

The cricketer and the 29-year-old victim met on the dating application, Tinder on 29th October and thus, decided to meet each other on 2nd November. They went for drinks and dinner, and then returned to the victim’s house.

There the victim accused Gunathilaka of sexually assaulting the victim four times. He is accused of having forced sex with the victim and choking her thrice. The woman stated that she didn’t give consent to have sex without a condom or to choke her during sexual intercourse.

Aftermath

Quoting the police documents, Australian media said, “The complainant tried to remove the accused’s hand by grabbing his wrist, but the accused squeezed tighter around her neck.”  

The victim told her friends about the incident, had a counseling session, and saw her doctor before reporting the case to the police. She also underwent a sexual assault forensic examination at the hospital and she got her brain scanned to see if she has any injuries due to forceful choking.

The cricketer has denied any violence and said that both gave consent for having sex. However, later when detectives asked about the conversation around consent, he couldn’t recall anything.

Sri Lanka Cricket’s Response

After the case came to light, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) suspended Danushka Gunathilaka from all forms of cricket. The body has also appointed a three-member panel to investigate the case.

“The committee will also focus the inquiry on various alleged incidents that have come to the attention of Sri Lanka Cricket and that are said to have allegedly taken place during the national team’s stay in Australia. The panel in this process will call for an immediate explanation from the Team Manager pertaining to his conduct, with references to the occurrence of such incidents,” SLC said in a statement.

The panel will look for a response from the team manager and investigate how the events unfolded. After the Sri Lanka cricket team’s exit from the T20 World Cup, the team was about to leave for home when police arrested Danushka on Sunday morning.

The batter was denied bail and will face a maximum of 14 years of imprisonment.
