According to a study, humans tend to believe in others more easily than themselves. Which is also the reason why people can be easily manipulated. Books are no exception. That is because realistically speaking, a book is a compilation of thoughts of another person. Right? And as I said, words can manipulate you for better or worse.

Books have the power to re-educate us and transform our lives for the better. A book can be a mentor to show us the right path when we have none and entertain us in times of isolation and pandemic.

There are only a few books that have stood the test of time and so I have decided to manipulate you into transforming your lives with these books which I have listed below:

Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life

By Francesc Miralles and Hector Garcia

“Only staying active will make you want to live a hundred years.”

According to the Japanese, everyone has an ikigai—a reason for living and finding it is the key to a happier and longer life. Speaking of which, having a strong sense of ikigai infuses each day with meaning. Which is the reason why we get up every morning. It’s also the reason many Japanese never really retire. There’s no word in Japanese that means to retire, in the sense that it does in English. The Japanese remain active throughout their life. And work, doing what they enjoy, because they’ve found a real purpose in life which is the key to happiness.

Third Calling: What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?

By Leona Bergstrom and Richard Bergstrom

Call it your youth or maybe ‘First Calling’ – it’s a time of opportunities, to grow-up, pursue education, find love and marry, start a family, and get established (the First Calling). Then comes the time to focus on careers and establish a reputation, raise children, and care for elder parents or Second Calling.

Then, when everything seems to be calm and what feels like retirement from your lifelong hard work something transformational happens. It is a new season-the Third Calling, a whole new season of opportunities rather than a career that ends on turning into the age of retirement. Third Calling is a very powerful book that makes you see the world in a whole new light, filled with so many possibilities and a neverending list of opportunities.

And as Brida goes to and fro in search of her destiny, she struggles to find a balance between her relationships and her desires.

Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You

By Jason Reynolds, Ibram X. Kendi

Stamped traces the history of racism through many political, literary, and philosophical narratives that have been used to justify the notion of slavery, oppression, and genocide. The book demonstrates that the “construct of race has always been used to gain and keep power, whether financially or politically,” and how this power has been used to systematically oppress Black people in the United States for more than four hundred years.
