29th November 2019: A news alert on my phone read “Hyderabad veterinarian raped and burnt alive”. I flinched and swiped it away.

30th November 2019: The helpless guy in me can’t help but rant about what he has just found on the internet – The rape victim’s name being a trending topic on porn sites.

Now that I think of it, I didn’t want to read about it until my friends brought up the topic of the Hyderabad veterinarian rape. Why? Well, first, the headline was disturbing enough for me to not give the news a second look.

Second, and probably the actual one, incidents of rape are so common in everyday news that I have kind of found a pattern in them, making me lose hope in humanity.

This is what happens EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

A woman gets raped and sometimes gets killed and the police find her mutilated body. There will be a public outcry demanding the victim’s justice.

Among these cries of protests, comments of a few celebrities and politicians will stand out as they blame the victim’s clothes. However, soon the incidents will be forgotten with another woman getting raped the very next day.

News reports showing a minister’s opinion on Hyderabad veterinarian rape

A veterinary doctor in Hyderabad was gang-raped by 4 men and burnt to death. The details of the incident go on to show that even though the lady’s family tried to convince the police about the seriousness of the issue of their missing daughter, the policed chose a laid back approach. Until of course, her burnt mutilated body was found.

News articles showing non-cooperation of the police faced by the victim’s family.

But this time, I think India has hit a new low. While Indians are raising their voice against this incident, intellectuals are voicing their opinion, people are taking part in candle march and talking about how messed up the society has become; amongst all these, there are people- Indians who are going online and actively looking for the rape video on a porn site.

What’s worse is that the relevant tag for the search is the victim’s name itself. As in, people are actually typing the name on the search bar, hoping to find a video of a woman being gang-raped and burnt alive?

So much so, that the veterinary doctor is on the porn sites’ trending section.

How messed up can you be, India?

Well sure, you can make use of the loopholes of the law and debate about watching a woman being tormented and deriving pleasure from it being legal or not. But thankfully The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition rejects all pseudo-diagnoses and confirms rape is a crime and not a mental disorder.

So what fake diagnosis of rape tried to pass it off as “Paraphilia not otherwise specified, Nonconsent”, has no credibility in courtroom testimony.

Psychiatrists associate the watching of such recordings to an inborn inclination in human beings to be voyeuristic witnesses to tragedies happening to others.

Still, it’s high time psychiatry and the law interface deals with such gore online content and consumer base as well, that derives pleasure from watching women being sexually abused and tormented.

A Porn site had Kathua rape victim as its trending search on January 2018. The Kathua rape case refers to the abduction, rape, and murder of an 8-year-old girl.

Remember the 2012 Delhi rape incident? The incident that shook the nation from its very roots because of its brutality and savagery? The Nirbhaya incident? This horrible incident is a topic on porn sites as well.

Google search reports that show people have uploaded videos with ‘Nirbhaya’ and ‘Gangrape Indian Delhi’ tags on Porn sites

This time the porn sites show around  40 thousand videos with the ‘Nirbhaya’ tag. So, people actually uploaded their videos with this tag to get more views?

I don’t know and this time, I don’t want to.

I mean, 40 thousand! How large is the consumer base of voyeuristic, gore and sadistic online content?

“Among the uploaders of such videos, there must be a widespread sense of impunity and a ‘nothing will happen to me’ attitude. That indicates a complete failure of the criminal justice system and the attitude of the larger society,” – Sunitha Krishnan, the co-founder of Prajwala, an NGO that rescues and rehabilitates victims of sex trafficking.
