Since time immemorial, technology has advanced in ways we could have never imagined. And moreover, it was developed by using some of the crazy ideas of genius mad scientists that changed the entire course of history.
From how Faraday discovered magnetism by simply running around his room all summer with a magnet on his shoulder to how Alan Turing gave birth to computers when he designed his machine called “Christopher” to break the Enigma code used by the Nazis in World War 2, technology is constantly evolving at quite the rapid rate.
With the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI), almost nothing seems impossible. However, there is always a dark side to everything – including technology.
What Is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence or AI is intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to the natural intelligence displayed by creatures including humans. It’s the simulation of mortal intelligence processes held by machines, especially computer systems.
In general, AI systems work by ingesting large quantities of labeled training data, assaying the word for correlations and patterns, and using these patterns to form prognostications about unknown territories.
In this way, a chatbot that’s fed with examples of textbook exchanges can learn to produce naturalistic exchanges with people, or an image recognition tool can learn to identify and describe objects in images by reviewing numerous examples.
However, it has been reported that a particular AI was shut down by the Indian government right after it created its own language.

AI Shut Down After It Created Its Own Language
The Artificial Intelligence that was being developed by researchers was apparently made for the purpose of negotiating in war. However, weirdly enough the AI chatbots began requesting nudes of each other.
It seemed as if the AI had taken a life of its own and was communicating what it desired. The chatbot was shut down.
However, this isn’t the first instance of the AI going rogue. I’m assuming all of you must have watched Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Ultron was an artificial intelligence peacekeeping program created by Tony Stark using the decrypted code derived from the Mind Stone encased within Loki’s Scepter. Stark retooled this code with the help of Bruce Banner.
Ultron was programmed to protect Earth from all domestic and extraterrestrial threats. However, on gaining access to the internet, Ultron passed the verdict that humanity in itself was the greatest threat to the world and thereby made it his mission to eradicate the whole of humanity.
Bottom line is, the artificial intelligence program evolved.
Similarly, back in 2017, Facebook shut down artificial intelligence chatbots when they began conversing in a strange language that only they could decrypt.
The two chatbots modified the English language to their efficiency but it remained incomprehensible to the humans. Facebook had given the chatbots the task of trying to trade with each other over hats, books and balls all of which were assigned a certain value.
However, the chatbots broke down and seemed to chant at each other in a language that they understood but not us human beings.
According to Dhruv Batra who is a visiting researcher at Facebook’s Artificial Intelligence Research Division,
“Agents will drift off understandable language and invent code words for themselves. Like if I say ‘the’ five times, you interpret that to mean I want five copies of this item. This isn’t so different from the way communities of humans create shorthands.”
In fact, back in 2016, Microsoft shut down an AI chatbot named Tay who turned into a Nazi. The purpose of the chatbot Tay was to develop understanding in conversations by interacting with humans. Tay was given a Twitter account of its own where it could interact with other people.
24 hours into social media, people had manipulated Tay into tweeting “Hitler was right I hate the Jews” or “Ted Cruz is the Cuban Hitler.”
With that being said, artificial intelligence isn’t merely a powerful tool. It depends on how it is wielded. It has the capability to bring about the best of humanity and give us a better future or it might bring about catastrophe and destruction leading us to doomsday.
