India, which has 29 states and seven union territories, has over 800 languages and some of the world’s most diverse locations. There are endless superlatives to go about, from Himachal’s snow-covered mountains to Tamil Nadu’s temples and Rajasthan’s desserts to Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak.

More than 17 million visitors visit the country of 1.3 billion people each year, but there’s considerably more to gain than spiritual enlightenment and a larger waistline. Let’s look at some of the most incredible achievements that India has bagged over the years.

1. The Indian Constitution Calls For Inclusive Secularism

As a public policy, Secularism is indifferent to religion or equal rights for individuals of all religions, including the right to practice religion. Individually or socially, it translates into practising your faith while respecting the right of your co-worker, friend, or neighbour to practice their ‘own’ religion.

Respecting the rights of people of different religions involves not pressurising your views on others and not disrespecting their customs, traditions, or symbols, whether via word or deed.

We, as Indians are taught to respect every other religion existing in our country since birth. Being a Hindu, I won’t undermine the interests of my Muslim colleagues or disrespect them and vice-versa.

Not putting up our opinions and beliefs on minority religions pertaining in our country for ages has made India a much more diverse union of states.

2. From Its First Elections, India Granted Everyone The Right To Vote

Years ago, British India had restricted voting rights to various eligibility requirements such as property ownership, land ownership, income, and municipal tax payment.

But after many revolutionary moments in the 1900s, now the country is seen voting independently and choosing its representatives and leaders in the national forum.

According to the Indian Constitution, every Indian citizen above the age of 18 and of sound mind has the right to vote. The voter is not discriminated against on the basis of religion, caste, creed, economic position, or other reasons. It makes no difference what faith he or she follows or if he or she is wealthy or impoverished.

3. World’s Fastest Stock Exchange

With a median trade speed of 6 microseconds, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) in Mumbai is Asia’s first stock exchange and the world’s quickest stock exchange. The 137-year-old BSE is home to about 5500 publicly traded firms.

Since its inception in 1875, the BSE has played an important role in the development of India’s capital markets by offering an efficient venue for the Indian business sector to raise investment money.

4. India’s UPI Payment System

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a system that integrates several bank accounts into a single mobile application (of any participating bank), combining multiple banking services, smooth fund routing, and merchant payments under one umbrella.

India’s UPI payment system is a hugely underrated accomplishment. Even several sophisticated Western countries lack such an easy-to-use system.

5. Successful at MOM In The Very First Attempt

India was the first (yes, the first!) country in the world to successfully launch the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), better known as Mangalyaan, into orbit on its first attempt.

The Mangalyaan mission, launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), not only made ISRO the fourth organisation to place a spacecraft in Mars’ orbit, but it also made India the first Asian country to enter Mars’ orbit.

The Mangalyaan mission offered various recognitions to India and boosted the Indian Space Research Organisation’s reputation among global space organisations like NASA and Roscosmos.
