Union minister Narayan Rane was arrested yesterday over his remarks against Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, which triggered a political row and protests.

Crux

Rane had said that he would have slapped Thackeray over the latter’s ignorance of the year of India’s independence. After his arrest, Rane was taken to Mahad in Raigad district where he was produced before a court.

Rane in custody…

Cases were registered against the BJP leader at Mahad as well as at Nashik and Pune as his remark set off angry protests by workers of the ruling Shiv Sena. Rane was taken into custody at Golwali in Ratnagiri district during his ‘Jan Ashirwad Yatra’ and was taken to Sangameshwar police station.

He was granted bail by a Mahad magistrate minutes before midnight. The bail stood at INR 15,000, with a condition to appear in the Mahad City police station on August 30th and September 13th.

There’s History

The bad blood between Shiv Sena and Rane goes way back. The Union minister had begun his political career with the Sena and rose to become chief minister in 1999.

In 2003, when the Sena in a convention in Mahabaleshwar named Uddhav Thackeray as party’s “executive president”, Rane had opposed the move and went on to challenge Uddhav’s leadership.

Uddhav Thackeray’s old dig at Yogi Adityanath is at question now…

Due to this, he was expelled from the party in 2005 by the then Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray for “anti-party activities” after Rane alleged the posts and tickets in the elections were sold in the party.

Post that, he joined Congress and attempted to take 40 legislators with him, which was subsequently foiled by Shiv Sena. In 2017, he quit Congress, stating that there was no scope after he was promised the Chief Ministerial berth from the party.

He formed his own party, Maharashtra Swabhiman Paksh, after which he decided to side with BJP and got a seat in the Rajya Sabha, merging his party with BJP in 2019.

While Rane never criticised Balasaheb Thackeray, the OG Shiv Sena leader, he does not hold back his criticism for Uddhav Thackeray. Over the years, he has even taken digs at Uddhav’s wife Rashmi and son Aaditya.

The recent fiasco occurred after his speech on Monday evening in Mahad city in Raigad. Narayan Rane said, “It is shameful that the chief minister does not know the year of independence. He leaned back to enquire about the count of years of independence during his speech. Had I been there, I would have given a tight slap.
