Delhi is a melting pot of culture. Part of this is the heterogeneous nature of the population of Delhi, where people come from far and beyond.

Giving rise to a composite culture of food, art and tradition, many foreign communities have settled in Delhi, making it their home. One such community is of the Afghans.

The Afghans migrated to India and settled in Delhi, inhabiting areas like Lajpat Nagar and Bhogal. They brought with them, their culture, food and ways of life to feel a little bit close to home, in an alien environment.

Emanating from this Afghani food tradition is that of ‘naan’ or bread making. Naan is a traditional Afghani flatbread that is made from scratch by men who are called Naanwais or naan makers.
