Who Is Tejaswi Surya?

The Karnataka High Court lawyer is a Member of Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha from the Bangalore South Constituency representing Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). Surya is a young politician who is very active on social media.

He has been attending to cries of help during lockdown through his social media and is vocal about socio-political issues. Being a young and intelligent leader, many young Indians follow him on his social media handles.

What Happened?

Tejasvi tweeted on 23rd March 2015 that, “95% Arab women have never had an orgasm in the last few hundred years! Every mother has produced kids as an act of sex and not love” quoting Canadian-Pakistani author Tarek Fatah. The tweet was later deleted and can be found in the digital archive.

This comment of Surya surfaced again today in 2020 and various people deduced that Surya attempted to demean Arabic and Islamic women.

Congressman Srivatsa came forward and condemned this tweet from Tejasvi on Twitter. Srivatsa tweeted: “@tejasvi_surya that’s quite cheap Tejasvi. Personally expect you to lead BJP into a new type of politics…” to which Surya replied his justification stating that he merely quoted what Tarak Fateh said.

He further stated that he agrees with the fact that ‘islamo-fascism’ is a great threat to civilisation.

Reaction To The Tweet

#Dismiss_Tejasvi_Surya is trending on Twitter.

A user on Twitter wrote that “Hon’ble PM must take strict action against him, otherwise it will adversely affect the relationship between India and Arab countries.”

Men and women from Arabic countries are prominently bashing Tejasvi amongst others. People from both the left and the right-wing are questioning the intent of Surya and his tweet.

However, rather than apologizing, the BJP MP has deleted the tweet.

Also, this isn’t the first time that Tejasvi Surya’s remarks have sparked controversy. Earlier, he had to delete his 2014 tweet questioning and opposing women’s reservation in the Parliament.

Indian politics has been through different phases when uneducated and ill-mannered politicians have made callous and irresponsible remarks. However, such a derogatory remark coming in modern society from a young and educated politician isn’t what the Indian population expects.

Rather, people choose educated leaders to ensure that the country gets a better future however, such comments haven’t only let down the supporters of Surya but the entire country.
