Judges along with their judgements have been increasingly getting in the news for pulling up lawyers and how they are behaving in court.

Lawyers or even sometimes other judges are being called upon for not behaving appropriately in the courts or while a session is going on.

The Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has often been in the news for calling out lawyers and how they should be acting while in court and he just added another incident to the list recently.

What Did The CJI Say?

On Wednesday, CJI Chandrachud scolded a lawyer for his tone being too high pitch and reminded him that this was not appropriate and now to “browbeat the court”.

The CJI while presiding over a listing of a petition said “One second, lower your voice. You’re arguing before the first court of the Supreme Court of India; lower your pitch, otherwise, I will have you removed from the Court.”

As per reports, the CJI did not appreciate the way the lawyer was speaking and reminded him to be respectful and appropriate of where he was speaking.

He also spoke about how the decorum of the courtroom must be maintained and added “Please lower your pitch first. If you think you can browbeat us by raising your voice, you’re mistaken. It has not happened in 23 years; it will not happen in the last year of my career.”

Apparently, once did not work as the CJI had to remind the advocate again saying “Lower your pitch.”

He further added “Is this the way you argue before the first court of the country? Is this how you always shout at judges? Lower your pitch.”

The lawyer in this instance apologised for his behaviour and continued forward in a more appropriate manner.

However, this is not the first time that the CJI has had to remind lawyers about their behaviour as not too long ago he called out a lawyer for speaking on his mobile phone when inside the courtroom. In that instance, he said “Is this a market that you are talking on the phone. Confiscate his mobile phone.”

In March of 2023, CJI Chandrachud shouted at the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Vikas Singh during a petition listing. He said “Keep quiet. Leave this court right now. You cannot cower us down!”

He also added “Do not threaten the Chief Justice. Is this the way to behave? Please sit down. It will not be listed like this. Please leave my court. I will not be cowed down by you.”
