Like me, netizens were puzzled to find their Twitter and Facebook profiles flooded with memes and photos of a JCB excavator and the hashtag #JCBKiKhudayi trending on Twitter. The peculiar hashtag, translates to “JCB digging”.

In the past, we have seen all sorts of weird things doing rounds on the Internet. But after scrolling through my Twitter today, I was bemused about the type of things that interests us Indians these days.

For those who don’t know, JCB is an acronym for the J.C. Bamford Excavators Limited, a British multinational corporation which is known for its construction equipment. Here, we try to answer how such an unusual hashtag went viral.

How did this become an Internet sensation overnight?

No one knows exactly how or why this hashtag went viral, but people have formulated their own theories in regard to this. But after searching the Internet for hours, I have four probable reasons behind the success of the hashtag.

Some people credit Sunny Leone for unknowingly creating the JCB hype after she posted a photo on 25th May while standing on top of a JCB excavator. This viral trend gathered pace from 27th so this could possibly be the reason, although it looks highly unlikely to me.

One possible reason why #JCBKiKhudayi is still trending comes from the fact that several people, especially Indians are watching videos of a ‘JCB’ excavator digging up the dirt on YouTube.

This came to our notice when a Twitter user pointed this out and showed how random JCB excavator videos have several million views.

One more person on Twitter explained how the hashtag went viral, “Reason why #jcbkikhudayi is trending.” This video shows a groom arriving at his own wedding on a JCB excavator.”

A meme page, Logic Humor on their Facebook handle tried their best at explaining the trend, although this too isn’t convincing:

“Okay People who don’t know from where JCB Trend get in to play. Someone posted a pic in some group of JCB saying “Bhailog JCB se khudai ho rhi log door door se paryatak aaye hai” bs fir or logo ne dali and this trend goes on and LH posted a meme out of it luckily it got a great reach and rest you all know”.

The hashtag went viral in no time and left netizens amused while other people have already jumped on board with some creative and hilarious memes and jokes. Here are a few that caught my eye:

What do you think of this trend? Personally, I think that it is downright stupid and although going through memes is anyone’s favourite past time, it should at least make some sense in the first place.
