Animals are largely dependent on humans. Earlier, humans and animals remained in a common ecosystem where they were interdependent, however, after the expansion of human power even in the forests, animals became slaves to humans.

It was only recently that animal rights organizations became rampant and proactive. However, the heinous instances of humans killing animals didn’t stop.

The incidents of stray animals getting run over by cars aren’t new. Similarly, an incident that took place in Kerala when a pregnant animal was killed by feeding her a firecracker called for a nationwide uproar.

A new incident has come to light whereby an innocent elephant was killed by burning.

What Happened?

A barbaric incident that took place in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu resulted in the death of a wild elephant.

Two locals threw a burning tyre on a 40-year-old elephant who sustained grievous injuries and died later. According to the police, the act was done by the locals because the innocent elephant was roaming around their resort.

When some people looked at the elephant groaning in pain near the Singara forest range, they alerted the forest officials who reached the spot and tranquillized the animal to treat him.

The elephant was shifted to an elephant camp for ensuring better treatment, however, the animal died on the way to the medical facility. Two people have been arrested so far in the matter.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media and people are reacting to the horrifying incident on Twitter and other social media platforms.

Another video, where a forest guard is seen bidding a tearful farewell to the animal, is also doing the rounds on the internet. Netizens are demanding severe punishment for the culprits.

Failure Of Law

Law plays an integral role in the regulation of society. However, the law can do its work efficiently only if the punishments prescribed are swift and severe. If the laws aren’t updated with time, they become redundant and useless.

Same is the case with animal protection laws. Animal protection laws in India are toothless tigers. There are several laws in India against animal cruelty, but, unfortunately, these laws prescribe less penalty and punishment, which fails to create a deterring effect in society.

The laws also lack administrative strength. The implementation of these laws is poor because, in a nation where human rights are least important, no one cares about animals.

The education and awareness around animal protection and the need for animals for ecological balance are inadequate, which leaves innocent animals exposed to the risk of death by cruelty.

These incidents come to light now and then are horrifying and should come to an end. Similar to humans, animals can also feel pain and happiness.

The physical agony that the elephant had gone through shouldn’t be repeated with any animal ever. To ensure this, the lawmakers must frame more stringent laws.
