With Prince Philip’s death, the Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Elizabeth II is now a widow. One often wonders why he was not called King, and there is a simple explanation for it. 

Prince Philip was never in line for the British Throne. Prince Philip married Queen Elizabeth II in 1947 and she became queen in 1952 after the death of her father, King George VI.

A woman who marries the king can be called a queen, but there are different rules for men who marry the monarch. They can’t use the title “king” because it is only given to males who inherit the throne. 

Nevertheless, he has lived a long life and here, we sum up some of the defining moments of world history that he has lived through.
