It has been a historic day for the Supreme Court of India with nine new judges taking their oaths all on the same day by Chief Justice NV Ramana.

On Tuesday, 31st August 2021, nine Supreme Court judges took their oath, since includes three women which has effectively brought the total number of female Supreme Court judges to a 4, the highest ever.

This is also the first time that so many judges, a total of nine, have been sworn into the Supreme Court all at the same time. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Supreme Court complex’s auditorium that has a lot of space and thus could allow for a physical ceremony while following the COVID-19 protocols of social distancing and more.

The venue is a change from the traditional ones of the chief justice’s court room.

The Supreme Court now stands at a strength of 33 judges along with the Chief Justice, just one low from the permitted 34 judges. The list of new judges include

  1. Justice Abhay Oka – Former Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court
  2. Justice Vikram Nath – Former Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court
  3. Justice BV Nagarathna – Former Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court
  4. Justice Hima Kohli – Former Chief Justice of Telangana High Court
  5. Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari – Former Chief Justice of Sikkim and Andhra Pradesh High Courts
  6. Justice CT Ravikumar – Former Kerala High Court judge
  7. Justice Bela M Trivedi – Former Gujarat High Court judge
  8. Justice MM Sundresh – Former Madras High Court judge

It is certainly a memorable day for the Supreme Court of India not just the many judges being appointed but also the increase of female Supreme Court judges. Till yet Justice Indira Banerjee was the only woman judge on the Supreme Court when she was elevated from being Chief Justice at the Madras High Court in 2018.
