Independence Day: An event which occurred 72 years ago, does, fascinatingly, hold sentimental values among us millennials: but that happens only on the 15th of August. When these patriotic sentiments do arise on this day, let’s make sure to make the most out of them.

It’s a national holiday on this day and here is a list of what can be done to catch up on some fun/entertainment which otherwise lacks in our mundane lives.

START YOUR DAY WITH THE RED FORT FLAG HOISTING

This one is probably most common. Yet, especially for people who come from different parts of India (exclusively freshers), this one has been on the cards for quite some time.

We’ve been watching the flag hoisting and the Prime Minister’s speech on the television year after year. Only witnessing the same thing live before our eyes will truly set the spirit of independence day.

Once you get yourself there, you’ll also witness the 21 gunshots, the Independence Day Fair and many other happenings that’ll make you feel utterly proud and patriotic.

INDIA GATE

If you’ve missed the Red Fort parade, a walk near the India Gate on the Independence day, especially during the evening, is bound to be littered with a lot of independence-day-special items by the street hawkers and vendors. The local tiranga chuski can be found somewhere along the streets too.

A KITE-FLYING CONTEST

Especially famous in North India, this activity brings friends together for an outdoor game just like old times. You could organise such a get-together, or, could visit a kite-flying festival which takes place in different parts of Delhi.

The entire sight of numerous free kites along with few people humming patriotic songs gives the essence of Independence Day.

IF YOU’RE TOO LAZY TO GET OUT OF BED, HERE’S WHAT YOU DO ON INDEPENDENCE DAY:

Independence day is all about getting the feel for the freedom struggle. If this is a day where you just want to stay indoors, there are a number of movies and documentaries that will keep you in the independence-day-mood all day.

Lagaan, Rang De Basanti, Mangal Pandey (The Rising), Jashn-e-Azadi, I am twenty: these are few movies and documentaries that can be binge-watched for a convenient yet sentimentally rich Independence Day.

And don’t worry about food, too. A lot of restaurants provide huge discounts and offers on Independence day, check them out here.

LONG-WEEKEND TRIP

Club together all the leaves you can take for this month: you get 5 days to yourself. The longest weekend or a mini-vacation is an easy way this time.

Plan that road trip you’ve been wanting to go to for months now. (Tip: do search ‘Valley of Flowers’ on Google and see if you can plan a trip there).

Try these this independence day and truly enjoy the day. If you’re planning to do something even better, do suggest us in the comment section below.

Happy Independence day, folks!
