How To Not Be An Arse To Customer Care

By Shubhani Syal

We’re always hearing of customer care employees being rude and misbehaving with the customers. Which, in some cases, is really that person’s fault. But we need to take a look at the customers too. Sometimes, you’re the ass. And you need to stop.

While when the customer care executives misbehave, their job is on the line, the customers hardly loses anything when they misbehave. You might have had a bad day, the product you’re complaining about might genuinely suck or whatever, it does not give you the right to take it out on anyone.

The Telemarketing Call

Ok I agree, they’re irritating. When you’ve had a long day or you’re super busy and your phone rings, the last thing you want to do is attend a telemarketing call. But it’s not their fault. It’s their job. So respect that and respectfully say you’re not interested or to call back later. Do not waste their time or yours.

The Complaint Call

This is when you call the customer care about a product you bought that sucks or a service the company provided which was crappy. Now, obviously, a bad product or service will not make you feel happy. But the crappy product is not their fault. They did not provide the service or manufacture the product. They just answered the phone. So do not scream, shout, abuse or threaten the customer care rep. It’s not their fault.

The Prank Call

They get it when you’re pranking them. They are not stupid. But they are allowed to treat you as such. Can you stop wasting their time and yours? It’s juvenile and stupid.

If you’re that free that you can prank call customer care, why don’t you take a look at your life and set your priorities straight.  Your time maybe worthless, but not everyone else’s is too.

The “I’m sorry Sir, I can’t help you.” Call

Sometimes, the customer care rep really can’t help you. They do not have the power to. Or maybe your complaint is unreasonable. They will not replace the pants if you’ve worn the clothes for a month and suddenly don’t like them anymore.

So grow up, and understand that they can’t solve your problem. It’s not in their hands. Just like you can’t help but be a jackass.

The Rude Rep

You called the customer care all prepared, you’re polite, considerate and everything, but the customer care executive is rude. They’re egoistic, unhelpful and have a “devil may care attitude”. Still doesn’t give you the right to be an ass though. So keep being polite and if they’re still misbehaving, just say “thank you” and put down the phone. Call back later and talk to another executive. Or email the company to complain about the executive. Be firm, not rude. It’s not that hard really.

So there you have it, no matter what the situation. You shouldn’t be rude to customer care. Or anyone, really. It’s called basic human decency. Try it sometime, it’s nice. And if you’re already a decent human being, congrats on being a rare specimen of the human race!
