Back in Time is ED’s newspaper-like column that reports the past as though it had happened just yesterday. It allows the reader to relive it several years later, on the date it occurred.
March 30, 1949: The famous Indian state of Rajasthan, with its epic historic and cultural significance, was founded today. It is on this day that the region of Rajputana, meaning “Land of Rajputs,” officially became a part of the Dominion of India.
The name Rajputana was given by the British administration during their rule in India. The Maharaja of Mewar (Udaipur) was accredited as the nominal ruler of 36 states that together formed Rajputana. After India gained independence two years ago on August 15, 1947, it came to be popularly known as Greater Rajasthan, with 23 states.
Jaipur, being the largest city, was formally announced as the capital of Rajasthan. On this day, four states, viz., Bikaner, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, and Jaipur, were merged with the United States of Rajasthan, and the entire province was inaugurated as Greater Rajasthan by India’s first home minister and deputy prime minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
About two months later, on May 15, Greater Rajasthan consolidated with the Matsya Union and marked the formation of a single, federated state called Rajasthan.
However, at present, Rajasthan consists of only nine regions, namely Hadoti, Mewar, Mewat, Marwar, Ajmer, Gorwar, Vagad, Shekhawati, and Dhundhar.

Rajasthan is very noteworthy for its rich historical background. The state played a very important role in several civilizations, the most significant one being the Indus Valley Civilization. Remnants of the Indus Valley Civilization were found at a Jain pilgrimage spot in Mount Abu, Balathal, the Aravali Mountains, the Dilwara Temples, Kalibangan, and a few other places.
This day, also known as Rajasthan Diwas or Rajasthan Day, is celebrated every year to commemorate the founding of the state of Rajasthan. A huge number of tourists visit the state during this time to take part in the celebrations. The festivities honor the establishment of the state, which brought together a disparate collection of sovereign regions and chiefships.
People celebrate this day with immense pomp and pleasure. They organize parades, cultural programs, and the tradition of flag-hoisting. In addition to this, the state chief minister also points out to the people the accomplishments and rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan.

Rajasthan’s architectural excellence, picturesque sunsets, exuberant atmosphere, and mouth-watering cuisines reflect the exquisite and distinct cultural identity of the state. It has a number of India’s finest historical sites, such as the Umaid Bhawan Palace and the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, the Hawa Mahal in Jaipur, and many others.
The state is also renowned for its lively festivities. Among them, Rajasthan Diwas is a very big deal for the inhabitants of Rajasthan, as it symbolizes the birth of the state, which has one of the most unique backgrounds in heroism and gallantry.
