An Interview with Dan Duminy, the Professional Race Car Driver Turned Musician

-

The South African born artist put out his first single, Vision, in March 2020, and it’s already taken off on TikTok, garnering excitement and anticipation for the release of his debut EP.

Startup Fortune, July 6, 2020: Dan Duminy is a 19-year-old musician. He’s no stranger to the spotlight, although as a former professional race car driver, his interests have shifted significantly in the last year. We chat with him to find out more about this surprise release, what we can expect from him in the future, and more.

What first got you into music and which artists inspire you most?

Well, I’ve been playing drums and guitar for as long as I can remember, so I’ve always had music in my life. There was a time when I thought I was Justin Bieber. It wasn’t just the similar hair – the guitar playing and stage presence were there too. Tupac is probably my biggest inspiration. There’s something about the way he mixed rhythm and poetry that still gets me.

What was your most painful failure? And what did you learn from this?

Before music, I was a professional race-car driver and I was set to race in the Audi TT Cup, which would have been one of the biggest races of my career. I’d been working and training so hard for this moment. The race went into liquidation and got canceled. It was a difficult time, but it all worked out eventually.

What was your biggest success? Was it important? And if so, why?

My move to LA. I went over there for a year, did my thing with my music, and people loved it. The American market is notoriously hard to break into, but my followers and supporters kept growing, so I knew I was on to something.

How do you differentiate yourself from your competition?

My South African accent does most of the work for me with that. While it’s more noticeable when I’m speaking, there’s definitely a different, unique sound that happens when I’m singing too.

What are you working on right now? Any plans for the future?

I’m working on my EP and album. The EP release will happen sometime this year and then depending on the creative process, we’re hoping to have the album out towards the end 2020. My big dream is to have a sold-out world tour someday.
