All of us, at some point in our lives, watched Spongebob Squarepants, a cartoon about a yellow sponge who worked in a burger factory.

Most of us loved that cartoon series, however, a TikTok recently went viral that suggests that our favourite cartoon character represents mental disorders.

A Little About Spongebob Squarepants

Spongebob Squarepants is childish, joyful, and a very clumsy sea sponge, who lives in a pineapple house along with his snail, Gary, in a city called Bikini Bottom on the bed of the Pacific Ocean. He had a friend that was a starfish, named Patrick. Along with him, Spongebob always invited trouble.

Otherwise, he used to work as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab. His neighbor, the arrogant octopus, Squidward Tentacles; dislikes Spongebob because of his behavior.

What Was Revealed In the Video?

A TikTok user, who calls herself a “conspiracy theorist” recently posted a strange theory about different cartoon characters, out of which Spongebob Squarepants’ theory garnered millions of views. She wrote, “It took me 10 years to realize that SpongeBob characters represent disorders.”

In the video, the user revealed that Spongebob Squarepants represented attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD, and his neighbor, Squidward represents depression.

She goes on to add that Spongebob’s best friend, Patrick had Down Syndrome, while Mr. Krabs the owner of Krusty Krab and Plankton, Mr. Krab’s enemy had a narcissistic personality disorder and bipolar disorder, respectively.

Netizens’ Reactions

Well, she didn’t reveal how she came up with this conclusion, however, the video has left many baffled and questioning their own childhood.

One of the users commented, “I really don’t know how to act with this new information I’ve received.” Another user took to Twitter to share, “I was today years old before I realized that Spongebob characters represent different disorders.” Another wrote, “No way this actually makes sense”.

The New York Post reached out to  Nickelodeon representatives to talk about the revelation, but failed to receive a response. Well, whether this theory is true or not, what rather is true is that we won’t be able to unsee these disorders whenever we rewatch the cartoon.
