The entire world has been under lockdown since the outbreak of COVID-19. The pandemic that has affected more than 5 million people globally has us all in a situation like never before.

While the whole world is facing the consequences of the coronavirus; nature is taking its own time to recover. The planet is set to be healing in terms of climate change and it seems to be a new world for wildlife. Trees look greener, the seas are bluer and the wildlife seems happier!

In fact, several places have seen animals coming out on the streets and enjoying the non-human existence in their own way. Whereas, on the other hand, some animals have been missing human contact too much.

Recent sights from an Australian coastal town in Queensland are hinting that dolphins are indeed missing human interaction and are ready to do anything to have them around.

All For Attention?

A cafe in Queensland known as the Barnacles Cafe & Dolphin Feeding at Tin Can Bay took it to Facebook to update their visitors about how much the dolphins there have been missing them.

An unusual and rather generous activity has been shown by the dolphins around the Australian coast where these marine creatures are seen bringing gifts from the sea for humans on the shore.

The cafe official mentions in the post, “The pod has been bringing us regular gifts, showing us how much they’re missing the public interaction and attention,” recalling the dolphin’s gesture that involves collecting seashells from the sea and delivering it to the humans on the other end.

Since the place was usually crowded with visitors where people would line up in queues to feed the dolphins and play with them, a sudden disappearance of humans around has made these dolphins adopt these new ways to gain attention.

It is speculated by a volunteer that this behaviour can be an evidence of dolphins’ hospitality with humans and how much they are missing them in their absence, but no scientific study is there to back it yet.

What Do Experts Say?

Dolphins are generally considered to be a very human-friendly creature and are known for their friendship tales with the human world.

Considering their instinctive nature in general, it should not be astonishing to see if these creatures are missing human attention and are making efforts to get the same.

It was reported that these creatures have shown this behaviour in the past but it has recently increased post lockdown. Thus, it is assumed that the sudden increase in activity is due to the longing for human presence.

However, Barry McGovern, an expert in dolphin behaviour is not in favour of making such claims. He says that Nothing surprises me with dolphins and their behaviour anymore. They do everything – they use tools, they have culture, they have something similar to names in signature whistles.”

When questioned if this behaviour suggests that dolphins miss humans, Barry clarifies the same saying, “In all likelihood, they probably don’t miss humans per se. They probably miss a free meal and the routine. They might be displaying a “play-like behaviour,” or just acting “out of boredom,” he said.

Well, it might be true that the dolphins are just missing their daily schedule like us humans and can’t wait to go back to it. But the thought of dolphins bribing us humans with sea gifts to seek attention is itself heartwarming and worth melting for!
