What Is The Nancy Tyagi, Neha Bhasin Controversy Around The Cannes Dress?

-

Nancy Tyagi recently made news for her second appearance at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival, once more in a dress that she claims she styled herself. Tyagi, a fashion influencer, went viral for her stylish outfits that were inspired by various elements of pop culture, Bollywood, and more, and were all handmade by her. Even for this particular outfit, reports claim that it took her almost 25 days to make this dress.

In an Instagram post from 18 May, she stated, “Ye colour meri mummy ka favourite hai, isliye iss baar decide kiya ki isi colour mein dress design karun. Isse banane mein poora one month laga, aur main last moment tak taiyaari mein lagi rahi, kyunki dress kaafi heavy this. (This colour is my mother’s favourite, so this time I decided to design a dress in that shade. It took me an entire month to complete it, and I was busy preparing right up until the last moment because the dress is quite heavy).

However, Indian singer Neha Bhasin soon came forward to challenge this being a self-made dress and to call into question Tyagi’s words.

What Did Neha Bhasin Allege?

On 19 May, Neha Bhasin posted a series of stories on her official Instagram page, questioning a part of Nancy Tyagi’s Cannes dress and how it was similar to a dress she wore at a performance herself.

In one of her first Instagram stories, Bhasin reposted a video of Tyagi wearing the dress with the caption, “This corset looks too familiar, hmmm… Just wondering.” She then posted another story showing herself wearing a similar-looking corset-style dress a few months ago and captioned it, “Same, same.”

This seemed to suggest that Nancy was not being honest when she said she made the dress herself, but had bought a readymade dress that she just added some other elements to. Bhasin then posted a photo from The Source Bombay, a rental boutique in Mumbai, showing a similar corset-designed dress.

Bhasin then posted a final story claiming that the purpose of this wasn’t to demean but just to put out the facts. She wrote, “The intention was not to demean another woman but to state a simple fact. We have all worked hard to be where we are. We are all self-made. But to call someone else’s work your own will never be okay.

‘The Source Bombay’ has also worked its way up from a small garage they operated out of 15 years ago. I have seen Surbhi, its owner, work tirelessly to sustain her business to now thrive.

Everyone has a story of where they come from, and just because no one is applauding them does not mean you rob them of their credit. I urge you not to buy a story but to applaud people’s talents and be okay to say what’s not okay.”

Surbhi Gupta, the founder of The Source Bombay, from where Tyagi’s dress is either from or inspired by, also spoke with the Free Press Journal and claimed that the dress was bought from their store.

Gupta said, “Nancy claims she stitched it herself and all of that, but she bought it from us,” adding, “She got it from our Mumbai store. We don’t have any problem. She purchased it, so she’s free to do what she wants with it. But it is our design. We didn’t do a barter or a collaboration. She did not stitch it herself, which she claims she did. The cape she wore doesn’t belong to me; that’s something she seems to have made herself, I guess.”
