There are many ails to Indian education, but one cannot ignore that with the bad there is also some good. Sure we still have to massively improve our education sector in many places, but at the same time there are various schools that constantly keep surprising us.

This is evident with 5 Indian schools being shortlisted in the top 10 categories for the World’s Best School Prizes, the first award of its kind. The World’s Best School Prizes has been launched in the United Kingdom (UK) and attempts to celebrate schools from across the globe for various contributions they’ve made.

All of the 5 schools have been shortlisted for different categories in the list. The shortlisted schools for the prizes are:

  • SVKM’s CNM School, Mumbai – World’s Best School Prize for Innovation.
  • SDMC Primary School Lajpat Nagar III, New Delhi – World’s Best School Prize for Innovation
  • Khoj School, Mumbai – Community Collaboration category
  • PCMC English Medium School, Bopkhel, Pune – Community Collaboration category
  • Samaritan Mission School (High), Howrah – World’s Best School Prize for Overcoming Adversity

Vikas Pota, Founder of T4 Education and the World’s Best School Prizes commented on the competition saying “With over 1.5 billion learners impacted by school and university closures, COVID has greatly exacerbated a global education crisis in which, even before the pandemic, the UN warned progress was already too slow to achieve universal quality education by 2030.”

Both SVKM’s CNM School in Mumbai and SDMC Primary School Lajpat Nagar III in New Delhi have been nominated for the same category and are among the top 10 schools shortlisted.

Khoj School from Mumbai and Pune’s PCMC English Medium School have also been shortlisted among top 10 schools for the same category.

Howrah’s Samaritan Mission School (High) however has been selected for the category of World’s Best School Prize for Overcoming Adversity.

In total 5 categories have been created for the schools to be selected into. These include:

  • Community Collaboration,
  • Environmental Action,
  • Innovation,
  • Overcoming Adversity, and
  • Supporting Healthy Lives

From the top 10 schools selected for each category, 3 schools will be finalised and through a public advisory vote and the Judging Academy the winners for each category will be announced in October this year.

Vikas also stated the purpose of the competition saying “We have launched the World’s Best School Prizes as a grassroots solution to help build the systemic change needed. By telling the stories of inspirational schools that are transforming the lives of their students and making a real difference to their communities, schools can share their best practices and have their voices heard at the top table to help transform education.”

The winners will be officially announced at the World Education Week where each school will be awarded a prize of USD 50,000.
