The sour feeling towards microblogging site Twitter from the Indian government had led to the creation of our very own desi Twitter called Koo App.

Although the app has been in existence since 2020, it is gaining much media coverage recently what with Twitter not exactly being a favourite with the ruling Indian authorities.

So as an alternative, Koo App seems to be getting much attention considering it is Made in India and also has the feature of allowing people to post in their regional languages.

Koo is apparently built on the platform to let more people of India post online even if they don’t know the English language.

Koo, in its About section, has stated that “Just 10 percent of India speaks English. Almost 1 billion people in India don’t know English. Instead, they speak one of India’s 100s of languages. They are now getting access to smartphones and would love an internet in their language.”

This can be seen with the plethora of Indian regional languages that are available on the app like Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Oriya and Assamese and more.

Right now the available languages on the app are Hindi, English, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi.

Various other languages like Gujarati, Assamese, Bengali, Kashmiri, Konkani, Nepali, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Urdu and more are said to be coming soon on the platform.

What Is Koo App?

Essentially it is almost exactly like Twitter but has a more Indian twist to it with the emphasis given to regional languages from the country.

The app called ‘Koo’ was developed by Aprameya Radhakrishna (co-founder of Taxi For Sure) and Mayank Bidawatka (co-founder of RedBus, The Media Ant and Goodbox).

Just like Twitter, users can share their opinions, thoughts and views on the app and the regional language part makes it easier for even those users who don’t know English.

The app had even won the 2020 AatmaNirbhar innovation challenge organized by the Government of India along with being named as India’s best daily essential app on the Google Play Store in 2020.

The rest all is exactly like Twitter where you can follow public personalities, your feed will have posts from the people you follow, there will be trending #s on the platform.

A person can post and share thoughts in various kinds of formats like audio, text, video, and images. Users can also put polls on their profiles and chat with other people.

There are even a good number of government authorities and people who have already joined Koo like Union Electronics & IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal along with MyGov, Digital India, India Post, NIC, UMANG.

There are some areas where the app is still lacking and needs to improve if it wants to compete with the popularity of Twitter. One thing that some reviewers of the app said was the feature of ‘auto-translate’ so that anyone could understand a post that was in a language they didn’t understand.

It has also been noticed that the UI (user interface) of the app is a bit slow and not as fast as other older apps.

It still remains to be seen whether Indians will really take the time to go through this app or not.
