February. March. April. May. June. The US-Iran war has been going on for five months approximately, and over the course of it, some attempts to reach a ceasefire have been made. However, it seems that finally, maybe (fingers crossed, knock on wood) an actual peace deal might have been reached by both countries.
The war did not affect only the two countries, though, with the entire globe coming under it. Through it all, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, kept boasting about how he and his administration would be bringing Iran to its knees. That they would, absolutely certainly, claim victory and make Iran surrender to their demands.
However, with the Memorandum of Understanding that has reportedly been signed, it seems that all those claims are not as true, with the only victor to come out of this, in essence, would be Iran. The US, on the other hand, just got what it already had regarding Iran.
What Is The Peace Deal Between The US And Iran?
According to a CNN report, US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian have virtually signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU) to end the conflict between the two countries.
The MOU dealt with a lot of things, including the nuclear capability of Iran, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, removing sanctions against Iran and much more.
While Trump had signed the document in a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron during the 52nd G7 Summit that was recently held in France, Pezeshkian has also signed the MOU.
The MOU is called the ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran’. Trump confirmed that he signed it, saying, “It’s signed. Signed it in Versailles, I just signed it.”
Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei also reportedly confirmed the signing, saying, “It was agreed that the Iran-US memorandum of understanding would be signed digitally. The memorandum is now officially finalised because both sides have signed it.”
According to a senior US official, “This is fundamentally an agreement that allows us to open the Strait of Hormuz immediately, commit the Iranians to destroying the nuclear dust, and then gives us a dial where if the Iranians dial up their good behaviour, we respond by dialling up the kind of economic and sanctions relief that can make them a more prosperous country.”
However, many have found that the MOU tends to be favourable toward Iran, or at the very least, is not very favourable to the US.
The Memorandum of Understanding, described by both sides as an initial framework rather than a final peace agreement, has first of all placed into order an immediate and permanent ceasefire of military operations between the two countries for 60 days while both conclude negotiations. The deadline could be extend is it is needed. The ceasefire deal also includes Lebanon.
It also requires Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping and to remove all mines from the waterway within 30 days. And lifts the US naval blockade of Iranian ports.

What Is The World Saying?
The MOU and all that is said quickly spread like wildfire across the world, and pretty much everybody had something or the other to say. Some used humour to explain in layman’s terms what this deal meant:

CNN’s Christiane Amanpour talked about both Iran and the US and what both of them gained. She also commented on the Iranian people, who had been fed empty promises by Trump and Netanyahu, about gaining liberation.

Entrepreneur and investment manager, Kirttan Shah (@kirtanshahcfp), also explained how the US had essentially made a joke of itself in these negotiations, stressing how unnecessary this war was in the first place. He said,
“US has released the 14-point MOU with Iran, which is a joke. first, they will have ceasefire for 60 days to finalize the deal, which, a ceasefire in Lebanon, a joke on Israel. Iran will receive $300 billion in reconstruction funds to build Iran back economically, which the US taxpayers and Middle Eastern allies will pay.
Not only this, the Strait of Hormuz is only open for 60 days toll-free, post which Iran will start charging a toll, a joke on the rest of the world. Not only this, but all sanctions against Iran will be lifted, and all frozen funds of Iran will be released. A joke on the US itself.
The only good thing, Iran will flood the market with oil after the sanctions are lifted, and hence oil prices will go down, which is a big positive for India. By the way, on the nuclear weapon, you may ask, Iran has agreed not to develop the weapon, but it has been saying this since the start.
But the enriched uranium is most likely supposed to stay in Iran under IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) supervision. This also is a joke on US because they actually started the war exactly for this. Can someone tell me what did the war achieve for the US and the rest of the world? Don’t encourage US wars the next time because it never wins, and others pay for it.”

Jeffrey Sachs, in an interview with Piers Morgan, discussed the Iran deal, specifically on how it presents Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He said, “I think Trump was accurate when he said a few days ago and then confirmed the quotes that were made by Axios that he told Netanyahu everybody hates you now. Everybody hates Israel now. This is true. But this is Netanyahu’s doing of course.
So I hope we see the end of Netanyahu’s political career in their elections, and I think that it’s very likely that Trump will soon be a lame duck president in the United States, in the sense that the Democrats will win at least the lower house of Congress.
And all eyes will immediately turn to 2028, and Trump’s own ability to stay clear of scandals, crises, and Congress will also be brought to an end.
So I think for both politicians this was a terrible debacle – probably worse for Netanyahu. This was his dream war, as he told us at the very beginning, on the first day, this was his dream war for 40 years. He tried to talk every American president into it. Trump was the only one gullible enough to fall for it.
Trump fell for it, and the disaster is on both of them.”

It is also being stressed by multiple reports and experts that none of the goals that Trump used as reasons to start the Iran war has been accomplished. The guarantee that Iran will never gain nuclear weapons has still not been made. Iran’s agreement not to acquire nuclear weapons for the time being had always been its stance, even before the attack carried out by the US and Israel.
Their agreeing to that condition again is not a victory. It must also be noted that Iran will not surrendering their already enriched Uranium, instead keeping it in the country itself under supervision. In fact, the US’s aggressive attacks and Trump’s personal comments on the country might have only made them more determined to pursue nuclear weapons, but with much more discretion than before. Then, Trump’s objective to destroy Iran’s ballistic missiles and their manufacturing units has also failed.
While the US attacks did destroy some bases, in the time since, Iran has already rebuilt its missile capabilities. Even the attack on Iran’s navy has not been destroyed as Trump claimed it would be. It is definitely affected, no doubt on that; however, it is not gone.
Trump’s goal to affect Iran’s ability to fund and support terrorist groups has also failed, with the situation in Tehran, the capital of Iran, worse off than before. Furthermore, there is no guarantee that it won’t use the billions it would receive in compensation from the US to revive some of those militant groups once more.
In all this, all Trump and his administration have done is neglect domestic issues that have worsened in time, and spent billions on this war while its citizens stay in poverty, hunger and more; driven an already conservative country into being more strict with its regime and thus taking away its citizens’ freedom and turned a once free chokepoint into something that now countries will have to pay to use.
