The BharatPe and former co-founder and managing director Ashneer Grover’s case has finally reached the courts and it doesn’t seem they are amused.

The Delhi High Court on 8th December 2022 while hearing the civil suit filed by BharatPe “seeking ₹88 crore in damages and orders to restrain Grover and others from making defamatory statements against the fintech company” had asked Grover and his family to file their reply in two weeks.

Now in another hearing, the BharatPe counsel had presented a video clip that reportedly showed an interaction between Grover, his wife and BharatPe during the company’s AGM on 31st December.

The BharatPe counsel had further shown the derogatory comments made by Ashneer Grover against the board chairman Rajnish Kumar and other officials of the company on his social media, tweets and even his recently released book ‘Dogalapan’.

The counsel also pointed out from a part of the epilogue that “He (Grover) is equating our profession (law) with prostitution.”

To this Justice Navin Chawla remarked, “The moment you start saying things about chief officers, you are ultimately defaming the company only.” And added that “Before hearing and before passing an order, if you [Grover] can also maintain some of kind of decorum.”

The judge is not wrong, Grover is famous for a lot of other loose talks in the past. Some of his most popular ones include:

1. Daily Wagers Comment

In September of 2022, Ashneer Grover had come under fire for his comments about salaried employees.

Grover in reply to a tweet by EaseMyTrip co-founder Prashant Pitti about an employee backing out of a job at the last minute wrote “In India there is no value of contract – neither would you go after someone nor would they as legal system is broken and expensive. So in India it’s – ek haath le doosre haath de. Best to tone down your expectation that you employ daily wagers in guise of salaried folk.”

2. Calling Suhail Sameer Nalla

After news of Suhail Sameer stepping down as BharatPe’s CEO position came out just a few days ago, Ashneer Grover tweeted “Poem for the start of 2023: ‘Chala gaya Suhail Sameer- he was a nalla! Shashvat- why don’t you man up and sambhalo the galla?!’ For my English-speaking friends: 1) Nalla (Nalayak) is incompetent/incapable and 2) Galla is business/helm of affairs.”

BharatPe’s official statement for this change read “BharatPe today announced that Suhail Sameer will transition from Chief Executive Officer to Strategic Advisor effective January 7, 2023. This will ensure a smooth transition for current CFO, Nalin Negi, who has been appointed interim CEO to partner with senior executives to bolster execution in all phases of the company’s business.”

3. Saying Book Writing Is Not A Profession

Ashneer Grover while speaking at a talk at a university said that “Logon ko lagta hai book likhna ek line hai. Bhat woh Chetan Bhagat aur Ankur Warikoo apni vellapanti justify kar rahe hain (Writing books isn’t a profession, it’s how Chetan Bhagat and Ankur Warikoo pretend to not be completely aimless).”

4. On Shark Tank India Season 2

Grover appearing at The Ranveer Show Podcast talked about Shark Tank India’s season 2 and his ouster from it. Among various things he said

“Jab tak tha, I had great fun. Pure show mein masti kari. Thankfully it was received well, pehla season hi kaafi successful hogaya. Mereko lagta hai, in some sense, I was a part of creating a Rs 10,000 crore franchise…

I feel happy ke maine ek Rs 500 crore saal ki franchise Sony ko bana ke de di. Kyuki pehla season is the toughest season to crack. Agar pehla season hi nahi chala, agli baari toh channel wale hi aapko slot nahi dene wale, bhool jao.

Pehla chal gaya, ab aapka Rs 500 crore ka ad revenue har saal aa raha hai, aapka Rs 10,000 crore ka dhanda hai, aaj ki date mein. Woh bana ke de diya, usme mera nuksaan hua fayda hua koi matlab nahi hai

(I had fun while I was on the show. I was a part of creating a Rs 500 crore business, Sony is sitting on a Rs 10,000 crore franchise… It doesn’t matter if it helped me or harmed me)…”

5. Rejecting Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma

While speaking in the Vaghera Vaghera podcast he said

“Maine bola chalo, Virat Kohli ko le lete hain, aur usne ek amount boli. Abhi bolunga nahi, Virat Kohli bura maan jayega. Phir bola ke Anushka ko bhi saath mein le lo.

Maine bola maine kaunse Mayavar ke lehenge pehnane hain aur sherwani bechni hai, woh Manyavar waalon ne kar liya hai.

Maine bola koi aur player bata, woh bolta hai ke uske baad kisi ki aukaat hi nahi hai.

Maine kaha ek kaam kar, jitne ka tu mujhe Kohli bech raha tha na, usko divide by two kar, aur iss number pe mujhe baaki 11 player laa de. Aur maine wohi deal kari phir, 11 player liye, Kohli divided by two ke number pe.”
