Indian Astrology Is No Longer Only For Bored Housewives; Insta Has Made Youngsters Clued In Too

-

For a while there, astrology was considered to be something that the older generation believed in, with all its rituals and talks about planets and stars, and not something the younger, more science-based generation was into. Many thought it was just something our naani or daadi, older relatives, bored housewives, etc., would put any faith in.

However, in an interesting twist, the younger generation, specifically Gen Z and others, is actually becoming more invested in astrology, taking it seriously and using it to make decisions in their daily lives. Social media has also contributed to this trend, with astrology apps and influencers emerging who have made it trendy and hip to follow astrology and discuss the impact of planets, stars, and their paths on one’s life.

How Is The Younger Generation Getting Into Astrology

As per experts and reports, it seems Gen Z is turning to use astrology as a means for self-discovery, self-awareness, and getting a better understanding of one’s personal growth. The thing that seems to attract them is the framework that astrology provides to navigate not just daily life but also complex topics such as identity, relationships, feelings of stagnation, desires, and more.

Gen Z and the younger generations also find astrology to be something that can cross borders, backgrounds, and cultures, binding them together with a sense of belonging in today’s uncertain times. The aestheticness of astrology also seems to be an appealing factor, pulling in the younger generation with all the imagery and concepts of constellations, celestial beings, zodiac symbols, the sun, moon, and planets.

There are even hard numbers showing exactly how many of the younger generation are getting into astrology these days. As per a 2023 survey by Astroyogi, it was found that around 60.2% of total online users using astrology apps are Gen Z or Zoomers, and almost 80% of the queries by Gen Z are related to relationships. While 39.8% of Zoomers showed a preference for chatting, Gen Z were four times more likely to seek free consultations from astrologers before committing to paid services compared to millennials and boomers, as per a Financial Express report.

It is not just relationships and lifestyle that people are looking for guidance on, but young professionals and start-up founders are taking an interest in astrology as well for career advice. According to a February 2024 TOI report, online astrology platforms saw an increase in young professionals and start-up founders using their services for consultations. Many of their queries include topics like salary raises, promotions, career growth, future prospects, switching jobs, and more.

Start-up founders also sought advice on fundraising, how much money they could raise, the success or failure of it, and even the relationship with co-founders. Hemang Arunbhai Pandit, founder of GaneshaSpeakers, saw a tenfold surge in young entrepreneurs and professionals within the age bracket of 23 to 35 looking for guidance. Puneet Gupta, the founder of Astrotalk, also mentioned how their platform saw a high volume of people asking about layoffs, salary increases, potential job changes, and more.

Insta Astrologers

There has been a recent resurgence around the mystic arts, with astrologers and tarot readers really popping up all over social media. Astrologers on Instagram are really flourishing, many of them quite young themselves, not the older people wearing orange robes that we often associate with astrologers.

They know exactly how to attract the younger generation, many often deem themselves life coaches instead of a guru or astrologer. We can also see our social media just littered with life coaching jargon like manifestation, angel numbers, gratitude, transformation, core values, and more, which often combine the concepts of astrology with life coaching in order to make one feel better.

There are also all those Insta Reels and YouTube Shorts about people claiming that so-and-so day is the biggest one for wealth or to manifest that perfect life; some will advise to write your deepest wish on a bay leaf and put it in a plant. Another will say to write it on a piece of paper and then light it on fire, or some will talk about putting it in a pot of water under the moonlight and so forth.

Why Is This Happening?

There are also many other ways that astrology is being modified to suit the current generation and their tastes better, from using memes and animated content to add a funny twist to influencers talking about astrology in an easy-to-understand, relatable manner, or even adding trending music that would catch one’s attention.

Meena Kapoor, founder and CEO of Astroyogi, noticed that the pandemic had a hand in this, saying, “There has been a hypothesis for a while now that only an older age group is interested in astrology. However, even before Gen Z started showing interest in the last three or four years, the demographic was more in the 25 to 35 age group, not 35-plus. But that has changed; it became much younger, especially during COVID.”

She also mentioned that with UPI and microtransactions becoming popular and a reliance on credits lessening, along with these apps having a low cost for questions, all of it made it appealing for youngsters.

For the young professionals, it seems that recent uncertainty in the employment sector, rising stress, an unstable corporate sector, lack of jobs, pay cuts, anxiety over benefits, and a monotonous work-life have all pushed them toward seeking answers in these sectors.
