These places from around the world are known for their quirky and unusual features. While these details may be too much for some of us to handle, there are in fact so many people actively seeking these place out.
So without further ado, here are some of the world’s most extreme travel locations that are bound to give you the chills:
Located in Turkmenistan, the Gates of Hell is technically a huge crater that was created unintentionally. The story goes that a Soviet drilling rig had accidentally punctured a natural gas cavern, leading to the release of poisonous fumes.
In order to contain the release of these gases, geologists set the crater on fire, which as it turns out, has been burning non-stop since it was lit in 1971.
Today, there is a host of thrill-loving people who visit this gaping fire pit to fulfil their adventure needs. They usually camp around the area, taking in the fiery spectacle and click pictures to their hearts’ content.
Named for its gory reddish appearance, the Blood Falls remained a mystery for a long time in the scientific community. Nobody was able to pinpoint exactly why the water body had its red hue or how it was able to freely flow, despite the freezing temperature of its location.
Recent studies have however uncovered that mystery. These falls are actually part of a complex network of sub-glacial rivers and a sub-glacial lake (enabling its characteristic flow), all rich in iron-oxide salts (giving it the red tint).
Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat at 10,582 sq. km. When nearby lakes overflow at certain times of the year, a thin layer of water converts these flats into a stunning ‘natural mirror’ that reflects the sky.
The site is indeed a treat for the eyes and this is exactly why it has become a much-loved tourist spot over the years.
Beneath the bustling streets of Paris, lie structures that are not meant for the faint of heart. The Catacombs of Paris are, as the name itself suggests, a network of underground tombs containing the remains of more than 6 million people.
These tombs were meant as a solution to curb the overcrowding of the city’s cemeteries, and are thought to have been built during the 18th century. Today, the catacombs serve as tourist hot-spot, hosting an array of events like concerts and other private events.

This temple situated in Rajasthan, India, is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Karni Mata. However, the most ‘holy’ residents of this shrine are the 25,000 rats that are said to be the descendants of the goddess herself.
While most of us stay as far away as possible from these rodents, the visitors to this temple travel great distances just to pay respect to these holy creatures. In fact, devotees consider getting to eat the food nibbled by these rats as a ‘high honour’!
This town in Ukraine now has the status of a ‘ghost city.’ The town was evacuated in 1986 following the nuclear disaster that hit the neighbouring Chernobyl Power Plant.
The town is completely deserted because of high levels of radioactivity, but that doesn’t stop thrill-seeking travellers from visiting the site. The town stands as an eerie reminder of a past whose repercussions are still haunting the lives of many.
Considered an architectural marvel, this stone bridge was deliberately built such that its shape would produce a reflection that creates the illusion of a perfect circle. However, its highly unrealistic structure makes it a literal ‘death-walk’ for anyone who dares to tread on it.
The Rakotzbrücke is said to be one of Europe’s ‘Devil Bridges,’ as only Satan himself could have constructed something so unsafe!
