Fact Check: Was External Affairs Minister Jaishankar Mistreated At Trump’s Inauguration?

-

The Indian External Affairs Minister (EMA) S. Jaishankar made headlines for his seat being in the front row, considered to be a big honour. Jaishnkar attended the inauguration as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s envoy.

Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony on January 20, 2025, had him sworn in as the 7th President of the United States at the Capitol Rotunda.

However, in the midst of all the buzz around the event, a 35-second video clip from the event seemingly went viral that claimed authorities mistreated Indian EMA S. Jaishankar and asked him to leave the event.

What Was The Rumour With EMA Jaishankar?

The rumour reportedly started gaining traction after an X/Twitter user Veena Jain posted a video on January 21, 2025, claiming that a blonde lady had supposedly asked S Jaishankar to move but didn’t do so.

She captioned the post writing, “All Indians must be thankful to S. Jaishankar for ensuring Modi didn’t receive an invitation to attend Trump inauguration Just imagine the embarrassing moments Modi might have created trying to steal the camera’s focus!”

The video was picked up by others with one user commenting on the video, “Jaishankar was asked to stand in the back row at the presidential ceremony and he shamelessly refused. What more shame can he bring to the world’s largest democracy!”

However, this whole rumour was found to be misinformation as the security official was, in fact, speaking to the camerawoman who was just ahead of Jaishankar and not the Indian minister himself.

A community note clarified under the tweet, “The security official was speaking to a camerawoman positioned near S. Jaishankar. The official appeared to be requesting or asking the camerawoman to reposition herself, likely asking to move behind or avoid blocking the view of others in the area.”

D-Intent Data, a fact-checking website, also confirmed the same writing, “FACT: A video from Donald Trump’s oath ceremony is being shared with the false claim that India’s Foreign Minister, S. Jaishankar, was asked to leave the venue during the event. However, these claims are entirely baseless and fabricated.”

They further stated, “Upon closer examination of the video, it is clearly visible that the official was not addressing S. Jaishankar but speaking to a camerawoman positioned near him. The official appeared to be requesting or asking the camerawoman to reposition herself, likely asking to move behind or avoid blocking the view of others in the area.”

The site confirmed that there is no evidence in the video that proves the woman is addressing Jaishankar or asking him to leave.

A fact check report by India Today also claimed that this was a misleading video with their team going over the entire video from the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies’s YouTube channel which also livestreamed the event.

They found that the incident occurred at the time stamp of 03:08:19 when a “woman cameraperson could be seen sitting beside the minister while everyone else stood. Then, the cameraperson went and sat in front of Jaishankar and started taking photos of the stage where everyone including Donald Trump and former US presidents was standing.”

At the 03:08:53 timestamp, a female official is seen approaching the camerawoman, touching her shoulder and with a raised arm gesturing her to go back.

A few more seconds into the video the camerawoman can be seen moving to the back and according to the India Today report, “Throughout Trump’s address and the ceremony, Jaishankar was present in the front row and did not shift from his place.”

Another fact check by Deccan Chronicle also confirmed the same writing, “that the woman’s line of sight aligns with the photographer’s position, who knelt down after being asked to move, rather than with Jaishankar, who remained standing.”

The report also wrote, “A close look at a zoomed-in and slowed-down version of the incident shows that the photographer can be seen standing in front of Jaishankar, and the woman touches the photographer’s hand, not Jaishankar’s shoulder, prompting the photographer to turn toward her.”

Thus it has been confirmed that Jaishankar was not mistreated at Trump’s inauguration.
