Narendra Modi’s Central Government decided today, a week before the initiation of Delhi Government’s Mukhyamantri Ration Yojana, to pull the plug on the Delhi government’s scheme.
The Public Distribution System initiated by the Delhi Government to support this scheme was slated by the Centre to not be supported by the highly subsidised foodgrains from the Union Food Ministry’s coffer.
Using the pretext of the National Food Security Act (NFSA), the Union Food Ministry has conveyed to Arvind Kejriwal’s government in Delhi that the subsidized food grains cannot be used for any State government-oriented scheme.
They went on to add that the Food Ministry would have no qualms against the Delhi Government coming up with a different scheme.
This would come at the price of the Delhi government purchasing foodgrains from the market or the Food Corporation of India, bearing the subsidy.
An Overview Of Mukhya Mantri Ghar Ghar Ration Yojana
The MMGGRY has been proposed to help the State government in Delhi provide door to door services to ration-card holders to drop off important food grains such as rice, wheat, flour, sugar amongst other such produce.
This will enable a large majority of the needy to stay home and receive the product without having to go to any shop or stall to procure the needed rations.
The details concerning the scheme had been made available on the state government’s website however, it is no longer present. Furthermore, the scheme had been brought about by keeping the basic idea of ration intact- ration is the right of every poor.
Thus, to ensure that the ration reaches the poor and the needy, and avoid the dangers of the pandemic, the Delhi Government came to their rescue. To benefit from this scheme, all the beneficiaries had to do was fill up a form and submit the necessary documents.
However, as of now, it is not owing to the NFSA and its stringent nature. A couple of pleas have been made to the Central Government, but to no avail as of now.
What Does The Delhi Government Have To Say About Centre’s Reluctance
Owing to the recent friction caused between the AAP supremo, Arvind Kejriwal, and the Centre, this lapse in communication has further contributed to making the situation a bit more dire than it should have been.
AAP spokesperson, Saurabh Bharadwaj, urged the Centre to withdraw the notice that had been made on such short notice and permit them to launch their scheme on the 25th of March.
The cause to make ration available for the needy through public distribution has always been a cause Kejriwal has fought for through the years, even before joining politics.
The Centre’s unwillingness to dispense foodgrains for this purpose is thus, “unfortunate” as stated by Bharadwaj in one of his statements made directed at the Centre.

“We are aware of the several drawbacks in the ration distribution system across the country. The ration shops should be opened every day but that never happens. These are opened in just two-three days and there are long queues outside. The poor get their ration, which is their right, after going through a lot of trouble,” Bharadwaj said when he was to convey to the public the need to get the MAGGIE scheme underway.
Is This Another Instance Of The Centre Trying To Toy With The Dormant Kejru?
2019, the special status of Jammu and Kashmir had been repealed and Article 370 had been effectively scrapped by the Central Government.
As the human rights violations racked up, and the Centre sought to take refuge under the shade of protectionary nationalism against ‘militant’ forces, a solitary man stood up to voice his support for the oppressions of the Centre.
Arvind Kejriwal was the man who stood by NaMo as the casualties piled upon one another.
Unfortunately, he failed to realize that what goes around comes around. Thus, 2021 marked the year things went sour between the majority party in Delhi and the BJP led Central Government.
Having introduced a bill slating the provision to provide more powers to the Lt. General at Delhi, the Kejriwal government lost their bearings.
They failed to reminisce the time Kejriwal stood up for the Centre’s stance on Kashmir, as the same thing happened there with the LG being at the helm of governmental and administrative workings. And now, Kejriwal was at the end of the noose he had initiated himself.
With another series of public lashing of the AAP against the Centre, the latter finally brought about their supreme weapon, to halt the MMGGRY along the lines of the NFSA a week before initiation.
The halting of the scheme could have been done days before when it had been sent for ratification, however, Indian politics is an abode of drama and it never just ends.
Honestly, I would suggest that you switch off your news channels and tune into Lok Sabha TV for your daily dose of amazing content, or you could watch Kejru getting slapped or Modi performing Yoga if you are as fun as me. Believe me, it would be a much better use of your time than following Indian politics.
