Air India pilots have approached Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata for assistance and intervention, claiming that the HR department is not treating them with respect and decency.

Pilot’s Side Of The Story

The pilots said, “We take great pride in our work and our role in representing the Tata group and our country on the global stage. However, we are currently facing a difficult situation with the current HR department.”

The petition comes after the pilots’ unions repeatedly urged Air India management not to compel the pilots into accepting its new terms and conditions.

The pilots claim that their voices are not being heard and have asked Ratan Tata for assistance in finding a solution that is fair and respectful to all parties concerned.

What Did The HR Team Say?

The HR Chief said, “Any change that has been introduced in the contract is done in the boundaries of law. Anyone telling you otherwise that the contract doesn’t abide by the law is factually incorrect and is misleading.”

Notably, on April 17, Air India introduced a new remuneration system for its pilots and cabin staff, which has been rejected by the two unions – the Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) and the Indian Pilots Guild (IPG).

Crux Of The Matter

The promotion of captains with more than four years of management experience was the main source of discontent among the workforce. The two unions characterized the airline management’s decision to promote senior pilots with more than four years of service to the management cadre as an attempt to eliminate the airline’s unions.

The pilots’ union claims that the HR department has little regard for its personnel’ decades of expertise. Significantly, this comes at a time when Air India is undergoing a makeover to become a world-class airline.
