The coronavirus situation is certainly taking longer to settle down than any of us thought it would.

Right now, as per the WHO tracker, India has more than 1.3 million confirmed COVID-19 cases with the last 24 hours showing more than 48,000 newly reported cases.

However, as high as the numbers might seem, one should also understand that this is a cumulative number. There are various states in India that are slowly recovering and starting to flatten the curve.

Delhi and Mumbai, for instance, are recently in the news for having quite a low amount of active cases as compared to some other states.

So here we take a look at them and try to understand whether India’s COVID-19 curve is really flattening or not.

Delhi

Recovery Rate

1,16,372 people have recovered in total in Delhi till date.

Daily Case Number

While Delhi might have quite a high number of COVID cases, the daily case number has been decreasing over the past few days.

As per reports, in the past seven days, fewer than 1,350 COVID-19 cases have been reported.

Even the recovery rate has increased with it standing at 88 percent.

Number of Active Cases

Delhi’s active cases rate stands at 10,994 people.

On July 26th, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted Today, “Delhi reaches 10th position. People are recovering and No of active cases are steadily going down.”

Kejriwal used this screenshot in his tweet

According to reports of the active cases in Delhi:

  • 25% or 3,135 people are admitted in hospitals
  • 58% or 7,339 people are isolated at home
  • 7% or 904 people are recovering in COVID care centres
  • 1% or 137 people are getting treatment at the COVID health centers.

Mumbai

Recovery Rate

80,238 people have recovered in total in Mumbai till date.

Daily Case Number

Mumbai seems to be on the same page as Delhi with it too showing less than 1,350 COVID-19 cases on a daily basis.

As per a report from Moneycontrol, some days, the daily case rate even went to just 900 cases per day.

The recovery rate of Mumbai is at 73%.

Number of Active Cases

22,536 is the number of current active cases in Mumbai.

This is quite low as compared to other regions in Maharashtra since Pune has 46,013 active cases and Thane has recorded 36,678 active cases around Saturday.

On 25th July, Mumbai saw 1,080 new cases in a single day and Maharashtra as a state recorded 9,251 new cases.

India’s COVID-19 Curve Right Now

But while Delhi and Mumbai might be seeing some success in low active cases for now, the whole of India is not entirely doing as well.

A Bloomberg Coronavirus tracker stated that with an increase of over 20% in the last week itself, India’s COVID-19 epidemic is now one of the fastest-growing in the world.

It is certainly among the top countries with the most cases in the world, and the death rate is at 32,771 as per the Indian health ministry.

Maharashtra leads the list with more than 1 lakh active cases in the whole of India with Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka trailing behind.

On Monday, authorities also reported that a record 50,000 daily cases had been listed.

India is trailing a little behind in testing though, with it having one of the lowest testing rates in the world right behind Brazil.

According to Our World in Data, a project from the University of Oxford in the UK, India is at 11.8 tests per 1,000 people.

US and Russia are at 152.98 tests and 184.34 tests per 1,000 people respectively.

Delhi’s low active case rate could also come from low testing since as per the COVID-19 India website, the capital has only tested 958.28K people. This is quite a low number since the main Delhi area itself has 11 million people and if including the NCT population it is at 16.8 million.

It is difficult to say if the curve is flattening, but for the time being, certain places are showing some positive news and we can only hope it gets better from here.
