Why Studying At VTU Is A Good Choice For Engineering Aspirants?

Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) is widely known for providing high-quality technical education and is one of the most prominent engineering university in the Southern part of India.  It is one of the largest universities in India with about 212 colleges affiliated with it. The top engineering colleges of Karnataka like RV College of Engineering, MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Sir M Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology and BMS College of Engineering come under this university.

Moreover, 16 of its affiliated institutes are recognized by the World Bank for getting assistance in setting up word- class laboratories, campus facilities, and research centers.

The state government of Karnataka passed the VTU Act in 1994 which led to the formation of Visvesvaraya University and its dedication to technical education. This was done so as to improve the quality of education imparted at these institutes. This law states that it is a statutory requirement for colleges offering any course in engineering or technology in the state to be affiliated with the university. All technical institutes which were mostly affiliated to regional state universities were obligated to shift affiliation. VTU thus became the only affiliating university for technical education in Karnataka.

Among the affiliated colleges: 1 is a constituent college and 17 are Autonomous colleges with undergraduate courses in 35 disciplines, PG program in 94 disciplines and Ph.D & M.sc(Engg.) with research programs in 592 departments, over 4 lakhs Engineering Students study in the various institutes affiliated to the University.

The University also boasts of a collective annual intake capacity of 67,000 undergraduates and more than 12,000 postgraduates. In addition to this, the university also has 1800 seats for PhD programs with about 2,300 research departments.

The University having 202 affiliated colleges, Bio-Fuel Information and Demonstration center at Belagavi, Center for Nanotechnology at Bengaluru, VTU National Academy for Skill Development at Dandeli in Uttar Kannada District Parisar Chair at Belagavi, Innovation Clubs at VTU and in Affiliated Engineering Colleges, VTU Institute of Advanced Technologies at Muddenahalli, E-Learning Center at Mysuru, and VTU Bosch Center of Competence at Mysuru, VTU has established Centre of Excellence at various places in Karnataka in different scopes to bring a change in the technology and society.

VTU Rankings

In 2015, Visvesvaraya University was ranked 28th among all Indian varsities by 4 International Colleges & Universities (4 ICU). It has a world ranking of within 2500.

The University was rated first in research category in the March 2017 edition of Karnataka State Universities Rating Framework (KSURF). The associated colleges were also rated very high for domestic diversity, infrastructure, and patents.

Admission in VTU or Affiliated Colleges

Visvesvaraya University has effectively managed to bring several institutes, which were previously affiliated to other universities under its name. Admissions to the affiliated institutes are done based on the national and state level entrance test. These institutes accept JEE Main, NATA and state CET scores for candidates who wish to pursue UG courses. For PG courses, scores of exams like GATE and Karnataka PGCET are considered.

Courses Offered & Syllabus

VTU offers a total of 30 UG and 71 PG programs in the field of technology and management. It has 12 undergraduate boards of engineering, 1 of architecture and 11 postgraduate boards.

The institutes provide degrees up to Masters level in engineering, architecture, pure science, management and computer applications. These degrees are recognized worldwide due to the University’s association to Commonwealth Universities in the UK. You can choose all kinds of branches in your particular study interest.

The University follows a standard syllabus which is common to all colleges across the state. The syllabus is revised after every 4 years so as to keep pace with the technology upgrades in the world. It has also launched first-of-its-kind electives like metro and railway technology as part of regular curriculum. Marks collaborate from all arenas- internal, external and theory, practical exams. This ensures your overall academic development.

Many colleges under VTU such as Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology and PES College of Engineering (about 14 more) have declared themselves autonomous. They have the freedom of setting their own syllabus and evaluation system. However, the degree awarded will be by the university. This allows you to be exposed to a different academic culture and at the same time enjoy the reputation of the university.

Placements and Internships at VTU

All engineering aspirants must undergo a compulsory 8-week internship in VTU. This has been done so that students have practical knowledge in the fields they are pursuing. The University has set up internship cells for the convenience of applicants to find work. These internships will also have some weight in the curriculum of candidates.

Several companies visit the affiliated institutes for recruiting its students. The University has started a centralized placement process to provide equal opportunities for all colleges. The process is conducted at the regional centers. Renowned companies like Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Kotak Mahindra Bank, PayTM, IBM, ITC Hotels and Cognizant visit the placement centers. The colleges also train their students for the interview so that they put their best foot forward when they meet the recruiting officials.

Events at VTU

The University has state of the art facilities. You can make use of the best of opportunities available for you to excel. VTU has a lot to offer to its students. It helps in the overall development of individuals. Apart from academics, it organizes several sports competitions. These competitions are mostly held in its affiliated colleges. The winning teams get to represent their university in national level competitions. It also has an annual youth festival wherein you can showcase your talent.

VTU also encourages students who do exceptionally well in their academics through medals and prizes in its convocation program. The top 10 rankers of each branch receive gold medals from the University. PhD aspirants receive high research funding from the center and state government which benefits them in their field of study.

The University is known for their contribution to technical studies in Karnataka so that education provided is at par with the existing technologies and facilities.
