Who Could Be BJP’s CM Face For West Bengal?

-

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is potentially on the way to create history in West Bengal, with election results leaning toward a victory for the party, bringing an end to almost 15 years of rule of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The 2026 Assembly Elections are currently taking place across five states. These elections will choose for the 126 seats in Assam, 140 in Kerala, 234 in Tamil Nadu, 294 in West Bengal, and 30 elected seats in Puducherry. Among all of them, none has gripped the national imagination quite like West Bengal.

Elections were held in two phases, April 23 and April 29, 2026, to elect all 294 members of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, with the counting of votes set for May 4.

The election recorded a historic voter turnout of 92.93%, the highest ever in the state, surpassing even the 2011 election. That extraordinary participation reflected the depth of public feeling in a state where every ward, every lane, and every tea-stall conversation was saturated with political tension.

As counting began on May 4, the numbers that emerged were nothing short of seismic.

Early trends indicated the BJP leading in 192 seats, positioning it as a potential frontrunner, though figures remained fluid with each counting round. Meanwhile, the All India Trinamool Congress was leading in 95 seats. This reportedly means that the BJP could come to power in West Bengal for the first time in its political history.

Along with this, the next question on everyone’s mind is: who will lead the state, or, most importantly, take on the mantle of Chief Minister (CM)?

If the BJP secures a majority, the magic number being 148, the chief ministerial choice will likely depend on a mix of factors: electoral performance in key regions, caste and community representation, organisational strength, and the central leadership’s strategy.
