In a recent development, on Monday, breakdancing bagged a spot in the Olympic Games for the first time. It got a green light to be included in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Along with breakdancing, three other sports, namely skateboarding, surfing, and sport climbing also gained approval to be a part of Olympic sports. However, these sports will also be a part of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (to be held in 2021 owing to COVID-19), unlike breakdancing.

About Breakdancing

One of the major charms of hip-hop culture, breakdancing, formally known as breaking in sports terminology, emerged during the 1970s in the United States of America. Ever since that time, this dance form has been gaining traction all over the world.

The competing participants are referred to as “b-boys” and “b-girls” who are renowned for expressing a blend of athleticism and artistry. They get evaluated on their creativity, strength, rhythm, and a lot more.

The power-packed dance form displays footwork, freezes, and power moves which include explosive spins, etc.

Breakdancing And Olympics

Breakdancing appeared at the Youth Olympics held in Buenos Aires, in 2018. It occurred in the form of a head-to-head battle in the same. Sergei Chernyshev from Russia won the boys title in 2018 while Ramu Kawai from Japan won the girls title.

The World Dance Sports Federation (WDSF) commented on how proud it was to represent breakdancing in the 2024 Olympic Games and plans on kicking in the momentum for a wonderful representation of breakdancing at the Olympic event.

How Did Breakdancing Get Through Into the Olympics?

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach highlighted how the committee board had an objective to introduce new sports games in the Olympics that appeal to the younger audience.

The urbanisation of the Olympics and the introduction of events that would attract the young generation had been on the priority list of Olympic Agenda 2020. Breakdancing truly adheres to these motives of the International Olympic Committee.

Additionally, the Board has been aiming to make the Olympic Games more “gender-balanced” and approving breakdancing or breaking seems to be a step in the requisite direction.

In order to maintain the charm of the Olympic Games, events that appeal to the young masses and are more inclusive would definitely ramp up the Olympic event.

Another interesting fact about the 2024 Olympic Games to be held in Paris is that it would have an equal representation from male and female athletes, as announced by the IOC president.

Hopefully, the decision would reflect the desired outcome of “more gender-balanced, more youthful, and more urban” Olympics and would attract a lot of interest from the participants and viewers.
