Just as there are the prestigious universities in India, so are there the fake ones and there are certainly quite a few of them. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released its second edition of the list of fake universities operating in the country so that prospective applicants can be aware before applying to them.
As said by UGC secretary Manish Joshi “It has come to the notice of the UGC that a number of institutions are offering degrees in contrary to the provisions of the UGC Act. Degrees awarded by such universities shall neither be recognised nor valid for higher education or employment purpose. These universities are not empowered to confer any degree.”
This list confirms that these 20 universities don’t have the power to give out any degree. According to the UGC, a university is only eligible to grant degrees on an official basis if it is established under a Central, State/Provincial Act, or has the status of a deemed-to-be university.
Along with this, institutes are allowed to give out degrees to students if they have been empowered by an Act of Parliament. This makes sure that only universities that have the appropriate legal clearance and authorisation to maintain academic standards can offer legitimate degrees and qualifications to their students.
What Are These Fake Universities?
Delhi had the highest number of these types of fake institutes, with almost 8 fake universities. These include:
- All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Sciences
- Commercial University Ltd, Daryaganj
- United Nations University
- Vocational University
- ADR-Centric Juridical University
- Indian Institution of Science and Engineering
- Viswakarma Open University for Self-Employment and
- Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya (Spiritual University)

Uttar Pradesh (UP) stood at the second place with 4 fake universities, those being:
- Gandhi Hindi Vidyapith
- National University of Electro Complex Homeopathy
- Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University (Open university) and
- Bhartiya Shiksha Parishad
The rest of the states like Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal each were found to have 2 fake universities in their region.
Andhra Pradesh had:
- Christ New Testament Deemed University
- Bible Open University of India
While West Bengal had:
- Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine
- Institute of Alternative Medicine and Research
Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Puducherry each have had one university declared fake by the UGC, those being respectively:
- Badaganvi Sarkar World Open University Education Society, Gokak, Belgaum
- St. John’s University, Kishanattam
- Raja Arabic University, Nagpur and
- Sree Bodhi Academy of Higher Education
Several of these names had also been listed in the UGC list released last year and it seems they are still conducting business.
