The Top Sports Stories of the Week

-

In the world of Sports, history is made every day. Here are the top stories of the past week:

» Roger Federer sets up US Open final clash with Novak Djokovic

» England levels 5 match ODI series against Australia 2-2

» Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton wins Italian Grand Prix

» Nehwal, Sindhu, Kashyap and Srikanth crash out of Japan Open

Tennis: The Men’s Singles category of the US Open this year had a couple of major upsets with Nadal and Murray crashing out early. But wen it comes to the final, which is to be played between Federer and Djokovic, it seems as though everything has gone according to plan. Serena Williams lost out in the semi-finals to Roberta Vinci who has set up what promises to be a promising final match against Flavia Pennetta.

Cricket: English skipper Eoin Morgan fell just short of a century, but he wouldn’t mind having at that way for he led his side to victory yet again, and this time levelled the series at 2-2. The final deciding match is a wonderful opportunity for England to re-establish themselves as fierce competitors of this format of the game, after the forgettably early World Cup exit merely six months ago. What better chance to redeem themselves than against their arch rivals Australia.

Badminton: Unseeded Japanese Mitani defeated PV Sindhu in the first round of the Open itself, forcing her to make an early exit. She set up a second round clash with Saina Nehwal, who she also beat, in straight sets and merely two-thirds of an hour. Things don’t look bright for the Indian in the Men’s category either. Parupalli Kashyap beat Kidambi Srikanth, but soon after that, he lost and was knocked out as well.

Formula One: Lewis Hamilton speeds to victory in the Italian Grand Prix last Sunday, his seventh win of the season. This win takes him to 252 points in the World Drivers’ Championship, a gigantic 53 points more than second place. With his winning habit, he has made it almost certain that he will be the holder of the title this year. Mercedes too, leads the World Constructors’ Championship with 451 points.
