Tamil Translator Goofs Up: Rahul Gandhi Ends Up Sounding Like Modi Fan

-

If one were to ask you what the first image that comes to mind when one thinks of Rahul Gandhi, it is pretty much a guarantee that at the least it would not be anything too flattering.

Despite the many, many attempts to alter his image, which have, granted, worked to some extent, not least of which could also be attributed to the way people are waking up to the ruling party, Rahul Gandhi’s image, however, still remains something of a joke in the Indian political sphere.

In what has become an almost recurring comedy of errors, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi found himself at the centre of another translation fiasco.

During a campaign rally in Tamil Nadu, a botched Tamil rendition of his speech turned his sharp criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi into something that sounded suspiciously like praise.

What Was Rahul Gandhi Doing?

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently conducted a rally in Tamil Nadu, ahead of the 2026 Assembly Elections set to take place on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

As the head of the Opposition, Gandhi, in his speech, naturally launched a pointed critique of the ruling BJP party and PM Modi, accusing them of misleading the public and questioning the government’s decisions.

Among his many statements, he declared how “They told the nation a lie,” and went on to mock Modi’s deference to US President Donald Trump, saying, “If Trump says jump, he jumps. If he tells him to lie down, Modi lies down.”

However, the translation done by Congress’s Tamil Nadu unit chief K Selvaperunthagai seemed to be saying something altogether different. Observers, both those who had been there in person and those online, immediately noted that his translation diverged significantly from the original.

Even in times where the analogy, such as those including “jump” and “lie down,” were retained, however, the overall tone and emphasis completely changed the final meaning of the statement.

Here, we have compiled some of the statements that Rahul Gandhi actually said in his speech, vs what it was translated into.

Predictably, the internet had a field day with the mistranslations, with one user writing, “Rahul Gandhi’s lucky charm continues …. His speech got totally lost in translation,” while another wrote, “This video of Rahul Gandhi Vs Translator is pure comedy.”

One X/Twitter user posting the many viral clips of the speech commented, “The translation is and with full confidence!!”
