Nutritious Ice Cream Developed By Indian Scientists

409

Ice cream is the one dessert which everyone swears by, in sorrow and happiness, unless you are Ross, then people outrightly judge you for not loving it.

Even though having ice cream after a breakup works as a therapy, it is usually followed by a guilt trip if you like to keep a count on your calories. (Low fat ice creams, yes, but really?) Regular ice cream contains a high level of cholesterol and sugar, which (we all know, but do not accept nonetheless), is not good for our health.

All you ice cream lovers, this one is for you! Scientists have developed Nutrice cream, a healthy ice cream from vegetarian sources. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) constituent Laboratory, CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CSIR-CFTRI) Mysuru, in association with M/s Oleome Biosolutions, Bengaluru and M/s Dairy Classic Ice Creams Pvt. Ltd., has come up with this novice ice cream which incorporates Omega 3 and Vitamin E.

NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant launched the ‘NutrIce Creams’ on the CFTRI campus in the presence of CFTRI Director Ram Rajashekaran and Balaraju, director, Dairy Ice Creams on 4th August 2016.

Dietary supplementation of Omega-3 (ω-3) fats, which are the Poly Unsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFA), are known to have beneficial health functions including brain development in children and good health in elderly population. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of omega-3 for children will be provided in just one serving, claim the CSIR.

The CSIR-CFTRI has produced a variety of products like Nutri-chikki which contains spirulina, Rice mix, high protein rusk, energy food, nutri sprinkle, sesame paste, and fortified mango bar etc, to satisfy the nutritional content required by people. The nutritional composition, shelf life, packaging and microbial safety of the products are analyzed.

Chia seeds, which have the highest content of Omega-3 fat, as far as vegetarian sources are concerned, have been used to develop this product.

Dr. Ram Rajashekaran said, “CFTRI played the role of a facilitator bringing farmers, scientists, and entrepreneurs on a common platform and develop this ‘special’ product.” CFTRI has developed agro technology for Chia and has shared the seeds to farmers from across the nation.

The CTRFI wants Nutrice creams to be a part of the midday meals in schools to provide more nutrition to children, and thus, have been produced in large quantities. “Generally, it is perceived that desserts and snacks don’t have a nutritional value and should be avoided. Children and adults love ice creams and chocolate bars alike. We aimed at devising such desserts and snacks which are good for health. We are roping in food manufacturing companies to make these desserts using the technology innovated by us”.

The commercial launch of Nutrice is expected in the next couple of months.

Well, we sure as hell are excited for it, but I hope it has the same taste as the regular ice cream or it’ll be too disappointing.

Till then, let’s all scream for ICE CREAMMMM!
