La Liga Gameweek 21 : Real Madrid Still On Top Despite Not Playing A Match As The Title Race Heats Up

Real Madrid maintained their stronghold at the #1 spot in the La Liga standings even without playing this week, which gave a chance to Barcelona to close the gap to the leaders.

Real Madrid, after playing 19 matches have 46 points and Barcelona have 45 points after playing 21 matches, thus shifting the advantage to Real Madrid by a potential margin of 7 points, should Real Madrid win their next two fixtures.

The week was rather positive for Real’s bitter title rivals Barcelona as they played a tough fixture against Athletic Bilbao and romped to a score line of a 3-0 victory, closing the gap to 1 point with 2 more games played.

Paco Alcacer scored the 1st goal for Barcelona after early chances went missed and hit the post for Bilbao and they paid the price for that.

The 2nd goal was scored by Leo Messi after an error from the Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper allowed his free kick to go in the goal and finally, the 3rd goal was added was added late in the 2nd half by Aleix Vidal, to put The Catalans in th 2nd spot in La Liga.

It was then the turn of Atletico Madrid to turn on the style against Leganes as they won 2-0 with both the goals being scored by Fernando Torres to end a 4-game winless streak for Atletico and place them 4th in the La liga with 39 points from 21 games.

Antoine Griezmann missed a penalty and the rebound of the same penalty was scored by Fernando Torres for his 1st goal of the game and the fiesty La Liga contest was laid to rest as Torres added his 2nd goal after latching to a pass by Angel Correa and make it 2-0 for the night at Vicente Calderon.

Further clashes included the Sevilla vs Villarreal match, which was suposed to be a thoroughly entertaining fixture but ended up yielding no goals for both the teams as they played out a 0-0 draw, thus further denting Sevilla’s title chances and putting them on 43 points from 21 games, 2 points behind Barcelona.

The start of the show was Villarreal’s goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo as he saved a Samir Nasri penalty and made 2 more crucial saves to earn his side a well-deserved point for their resolute defense.
