Nishant Kumar, the son of Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] chief Nitish Kumar, has been in the news recently after he took oath into the Samrat Choudhary-led administration. Nishant is currently serving as Bihar’s Minister of Health.
If his connection with his father, Nitish Kumar, who was the former and longest-serving Chief Minister of Bihar, wasn’t already a topic of conversation, in the past few days, certain videos have been popping up, leading to increased scrutiny of the new minister.
Political blunders are a particularly tasty dish for the Indian netizens, and it seems they have found a new topic to sink their teeth into.
Social media was blunt and straight to the point in asking whether the minister was drunk or unwell.
While many in the comments had more concerning answers, the behaviour that prompted those questions does raise the question: what exactly are we seeing in these clips, what does it mean for the people of Bihar, and is laughing at him the right thing to do?
Nishant Kumar’s Videos Go Viral
Nishant Kumar, son of former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, was sworn in as Bihar’s new Health Minister on 7 May 2026. Within just a few days, though, social media has seen some interesting videos pop up, particularly of Kumar looking spacey, fidgety and unable to answer questions properly.
While there were memes and trolling taking place, some also asked the uncomfortable question of whether the man now in charge of healthcare for over 130 million people was, to put it plainly, okay.
The original video was posted by the YouTube channel, Khabar Unfiltered, on May 10, 2026, where a journalist asked Nishant Kumar, “Why were you given the Health Ministry?”
It was Nishant Kumar’s response, trailing off without a clear answer, giving vague or diplomatic statements, such as it has only been two days since getting the position and that he hopes to serve his role with responsibility and integrity, which spread rapidly online.
Several pages posted the video, commenting on the response by the Health Minister.

In another clip mentioned in this video, Nishant Kumar is seen addressing reporters shortly after taking the oath. Kumar, in the clip aired by NDTV, is seen saying, “First of all, I would like to thank the people of Bihar very much… They made JDU win 200 seats in the 1925 Bihar elections… I thank them very much.”
The video was soon shared by Congress leader Supriya Shrinate and others, who pointed out that this was probably the 2025 Bihar elections that became the 1925 elections. The humour here comes due to the date that predates India’s independence, the existence of the JDU, and indeed most modern democratic institutions in India.

Before the memes, before the videos, before the Health Ministry, Nishant Kumar was, for most of his adult life, a private citizen.
He pursued engineering at Birla Institute of Technology Mesra and, for a long time, claimed that he did not have any intention of joining politics.
According to reports, in 2017, he stated, “I have neither interest in politics nor any knowledge about this field. My first love is spiritualism and as of now, I am proceeding on the path of spiritualism.”
He officially entered politics this year on March 7, 2026, when he joined the JD(U).

The Issue Of Dynasty Politics
The comments under many of these videos have not been kind to Kumar, ranging from “From Rehabilitation to Ministry” to “When your dad decides your career for you” or “Bihar will never ever grow as a state never.”
However, the biggest topic of conversation around the minister has been that of nepotism of dynasty politics, given that Nishant Kumar is the only son of former CM Nishant Kumar.
Instagram page @ishowtrends.in posted how “Nishant Kumar reportedly becoming Bihar’s Health Minister has reignited the debate around dynasty politics in India. He has no major political experience in governance. No visible record in public healthcare reforms. No proven administrative background handling large systems. Yet one of Bihar’s most critical ministries is allegedly linked to him mainly because he is Nitish Kumar’s son. This is the same Bihar where government hospitals remain overcrowded. Many patients still travel outside the state for proper treatment. Healthcare workers continue to struggle with poor infrastructure and limited resources. People expected competence, accountability, and reforms. Instead, critics say this looks like another example of politics being treated like inherited property. For millions of ordinary young Indians, the message feels brutal: merit may get you a degree… but family connections can still get someone the ministry.”
The Logical Indian, in a report, noted it plainly: “Nishant Kumar’s appointment as Bihar Health Minister has intensified political debate over dynastic succession and ideological hypocrisy within the JDU-BJP alliance. The appointment mirrors the 2015 entry of Lalu Prasad Yadav’s son, Tej Pratap Yadav, into the same department.”
An RJD spokesperson also said, “The very leaders who lectured us on ‘Jungle Raj’ and nepotism for decades have now embraced the same ‘Parivarwad’ to secure their own political futures.”
