“Inside A Pressure Cooker,” SEBI Chief Madhabi Puri Buch Talks About Her IIM-A Days

-

Some of the most difficult and tough institutes in India include the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), and more.

Students go through many hardships, exams and more to get a seat at these prestigious schools since they are said to not only provide excellent education but also lead their students to get extremely profitable jobs after completing their course there.

The placement level from these institutes is very high with most students going on to join either very prominent companies or getting other prestigious positions in various organisations. One such alumni is the current SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch who recently spoke at an event about her time at IIM-Ahmedabad.

What Did The SEBI Chief Say?

Madhabi Puri Buch is the current chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and also an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.

Buch is not only the first female leader of SEBI but is also known for being the only female student to pull out of the placement process, something that most students would never dare to do.

While attending the 59th Annual Convocation of the institute on March 30, Buch spoke about her life at IIM-A, the pressure she faced there, the panic, the race for deadlines and escalating self-doubt. However, she also said that those things gave her a lot of life lessons and prepared her to be a better person overall.

Buch recalled, “The strongest memory I have of my alma mater is that of feeling like I was inside a pressure cooker for two years.”

She did add “But in the hindsight, how to deal with being inside a pressure cooker was perhaps one of the most valuable learnings I took away from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.”

Talking about her 35 years as a working professional she said “The sheer variety of stuff I got to do: creating and building new businesses; being an entrepreneur within the safe harbour of a large organisation, enjoying every ounce of empowerment that we were given.

Now, since the last 6.5 years, bringing to bear all that I learnt, to being a regulator, and having the amazing opportunity to create impact — not just at an organisational level, but at ecosystem level. In my wildest dreams, I could not have asked for more.”

She also spoke about how two generations those in the 25-year-old and those in the 60-year-old category are at a cusp of change.

She said “My generation was very fortunate… We participated in the dawn of a new India. Your generation, in my view, is even more fortunate… You are on the way to seeing the high noon of a new India… And, all the amazing opportunities that it offers.”

She further added “Everywhere, there is opportunity… for growth, for inclusion, for entrepreneurship, for breaking the mould… And, for leading the world. It’s a wonderful time to be 25. Interestingly, it is also a wonderful time to be 60!”
