“Extremely Disrespectful,” Kannada Director Hemanth Rao On IIFA Awards

IIFA Awards

The International Indian Film Academy or IIFA Awards recently occurred on 28 September, 2024 in Abu Dhabi, Dubai.

In the midst of all the media coverage about which actors attended the awards, who wore what, the winners, and people commenting about who deserved which award more, one director posted a pretty angry post against the IIFA Awards.

What Did The Director Write?

Hemanth M Rao, Kannada director behind the two-part critically-acclaimed film Sapta Sagaradaache Ello (Side A and Side B) posted a scathing post about the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards that were recently held in Abu Dhabi, Dubai.

In an Instagram post, published yesterday he wrote about how the IIFA Awards were “extremely disrespectful” and his music director, making him sit till 3 am in the ceremony but not giving any awards.

He brought up things like lack of transparency, respect toward other nominees and attendees, and more.

Rao wrote “The whole IIFA experience was such a massive inconvenience and extremely disrespectful. I’ve been in this business for over a decade and this wasn’t my first stint at award shows.

It’s always been a case where the winners are flown in and hosted for the event. For context, I was sat till 3 AM in the morning only to realize there was no award. The same happened to my music director, Charan Raj.”

He did clarify that his anger wasn’t about not winning an award, but the conduct of the prize and its organisers. Calling out the award show format, he stated “It’s your award. You can give it to whoever you want to. Thats your choice!! I haven’t won MANY awards and haven’t lost sleep over it, so these grapes aren’t sour.

If all the other nominees were invited and one winner emerged out of it. I wouldn’t bother getting irritated. Also, the format this year was just to hand out the award. The nominees weren’t even mentioned.”

He further wrote about how it was the talent and the artists who made these events and not the other way around, “Maybe it’s been a while for you and your team to realize it. Your award shows run on the talent that you put on your stage. NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. I don’t need your award to enjoy the best job in the world. Next time you need me on your stage… and TRUST ME…you will. Take your award and keep it where the sun don’t shine.”

He concluded his post writing “Everything has a silver lining. Mine was to see several of my team members go up on stage and receive a bunch of awards. It wasn’t a complete waste of time.”

Rao also cleared up that this wasn’t meant to be a slight against Arun Sudhir, another Kannada director, winning an award writing “And if it wasn’t clear, I have no problem with @tharunsudhir winning. My best to him and his entire team. This is about wasting my time and energy.”

The post actually saw a lot of support with people agreeing with the director and how IIFA Awards had become rigged these days.

One user wrote “I knew this was a mafia/ rigged when Katera won the best music award. No offence for anyone. The award should be based on quality and not on popularity or anything,” while another commented “Call them out! We support good art that you make. Commercial awards like these are pointless.”

A third one commented “One of the reasons kichcha sudeepa sir never attends awards, hemanth sir you are way more talented for any award, the award doesn’t deserve to be in your hands, your level is way above all this sir.”
