We are trained to say ‘yes’ as professionals, for extra work, help to colleagues, or some additional events. This can definitely expand the horizon of opportunities for you and also keep your peers, manager and boss happy and satisfied, it is important to realise when to say ‘no’.

It is widespread at work when the head of the office asks for volunteers or even assigns work to random people. Most of the time, these responsibilities are not related to the role of the employee their performance evaluation, or career growth. While it is great to go with your intuition and say ‘yes’, you need not do it every time, especially when you cannot take the time.

Linda Babcock, a professor of economics at Carnegie Mellon University and a co-author of ‘The No Club: Putting a Stop to Women’s Dead-end Work,’ said, “These non-promotable tasks… they matter to the organization, but you don’t get rewarded for doing them.” 

Not everything counts on your performance evaluations – there’s lots of work that is done that is never tracked, thanked or evaluated,” she added. 

According to research she conducted with three other professors, she revealed that about half of the time, managers ask women to do non-promotable tasks such as helping in the recruiting process or some other office work.

The fact that you are spending time on assignments that are not using your unique skills means you aren’t really reaching your potential… it can hurt your compensation, hurt your promotion and certainly does not give you any leverage when you try to negotiate,” said Lise Vesterlund, another co-author of ‘The No Club.’
