Cricket World Cup: Which Of These Teams Will Cause The Most Upsets?

-

The countdown for the 2015 Cricket World Cup has already begun. Fans from all around the globe await this amazing cricket fiesta that is soon to come. This is an amazing platform where new legends are born, new tales are written and traditional rivalries are renewed (just can’t wait for the India-Pakistan game!).
In this article, we will talk about the underdog teams, the dark horses, the ones that can shock us all and their oppositions: the world cup’s designated ‘surprise packages’:

1. Afghanistan:

Afghanistan’s cricket team has improved in leaps and bounds over the years. They have beaten Bangladesh recently in the Asia Cup and have a high self-confidence and morale. They have a good batting lineup with Nawroz Mangal, Maohammad Nabi and Usman Ghani. Their bowling front is headed by Hamid Hassan whose pace and bounce can prove beneficial in Australian pitches.

 2. Bangladesh:

Bangladesh is renowned for its heroic performances in world cups where they have defeated numerous heavyweights. In the current World Cup, they have a young and zealous squad captained by their bowling spearhead: Masrafe Mortaza. They boast of quality players like Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudullah and Rahim. They have the world’s best ODI all rounder in Shakib al Hasan who can turn any game on his own. They have young pacers who are inexperienced but are full of talent and skill. Above all, they have the self belief to produce the unexpected and surprise many.

3. Ireland:

Who can forget the previous World Cup where a naïve Irish team defeated England and that too in style. They have the most exciting squad amongst all the underdogs. They have a decent batting line-up which includes Ed Joyce, Paul Stirling and of course, the Brian brothers. The bowling attack is led by their captain- Porterfield who is a good all-round player. It will not be surprising if the Irish team causes major upsets; they are not to be taken lightly.

4. Scotland:

Most of us might underestimate this Scottish cricket team but they have nothing to lose and everything to gain. They have a decent batting line-up headed by their in-form captain Mommsen, who scored a whopping 520 runs in the World Cup qualifiers. We can expect a few turnarounds from this inexperienced, but exciting squad.

5. United Arab Emirates:

The team is made up of two Emiratis, two Sri Lankans, nine Pakistanis and two Indians. According to the people who follow UAE’s cricket religiously, this is a good squad which can indeed cause one or two upsets. So UAE too, can cause an upset that will surely alter the books of cricket history.

6. Zimbabwe:

The World Dup is going to be a very important tournament for Zimbabwe. Their cricketing opportunities have been limited due to political instability in their country. The players would definitely want to showcase their mettle and talent in world’s biggest cricketing platform. They have experienced players in Brendan Taylor and Chigumbra who are the key players for the side. They are sure to give some teams a run for their money.

So, in just a few days we will see the first ball being bowled in the Cricket WC 2015, an assessment of these ‘Surprise Packages’ has further escalated the excitement before the World Cup. 14th February, come sooner please! (*pun intended*)
